This exhibit features ceramic artists from Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio who consider how ceramic forms from sculptures to functional wares can tell their individual stories of self-care.

From the curator: I think often of Ang Le’s movie “Eat Drink Man Woman” and the how the sumptuously prepared and cooked food is a major character in a story about family, duty, expectations, culture, and love. The traditional dishes are a conduit in for hopes of facilitating spoken affirmations, and the patriarch of the family is the conductor of love who sees his care facilitated through the act of cooking and feeding. It is a scene we know all too well, the cultural instillment of visualizing care, affection, and love while yearning to hear the profoundly simple words “I am proud of you” and “I love you”. Food is love and, in many ways, it is the only way we have been shown love.

The act of preparing food--the presentation of it, setting the table, and feeding others--are forms of care instilled in us culturally. I wonder who takes care of the caretakers?

Jennifer Ling Datchuk is an artist born in Warren, Ohio and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is an exploration of her layered identity – as a woman, a Chinese woman, as an “American,” as a third culture kid.
