Barry Island Primary Weekly NewsLETTER - Friday 12th May

The News This Week

Croeso! Welcome! Another busy week of learning across the school. Here are some snippets and reminders of upcoming events, please remember to follow your child's learning on our school's Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/BarryPSIsland.

ECO Committee - Healthy Schools Award!

We are so proud to announce that we have successfully renewed our prestigious Healthy Schools Award.

The scheme covers 7 topic areas:

Food and fitness

Mental and Emotional Health and Well Being

Environment

Safety

Hygiene

Substance Misuse

Personal Development and Relationships

Within each of these areas, schools are required to demonstrate they have reached high standards of practice. The National Quality Award of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme is awarded to schools that have achieved the highest standards in all seven areas.

We would like to thank our Eco Committee, our cook Jess and her team, and the whole school community for their continued hard work and dedication to ensure our school maintains the highest standards of Wellbeing for our learners. Ardderchog!!

Reminder: Walk to School Wednesday

The ECO Committee have launched our wonderful 'Walk to School Wednesday'. The first winners of our fantastic 'Wow' badges were awarded this week - congratulations! Every Wednesday we are encouraging everyone to try and walk, cycle or scooter to school. Even if a car journey is essential, why not park up a little way away from school and walk the last part of the ride?

We are also hoping to launch a 'Daily Mile' initiative at he start of the school day - what a great way to get energised for our learning!! Watch this space for more details shortly.

'Capture a Moment in Time'

This week all classes enjoyed an immersion day at Sain Ffagan, the Museum of Welsh Life, as part of their new summer term topics.

Dosbarth Bedwen enjoying exploring Welsh history & culture...

Each class has been assigned a location at the site to research. A team of experts welcomed the children and shared their knowledge and expertise. There was also an opportunity to ask questions and gather information to bring back to school.

'Questions & Answers' session at Kennixton Farmhouse...

The project will work in partnership with Ysgol St Baruc and Cardiff Metropolitan University, culminating in a showcase event - watch this space!

School Uniform / PE Kit Reminder

Please remember our policy regarding school uniform and PE kits. We are very proud of our Barry Island Primary family and we want the children to feel part of something special. In particular, we would be grateful if PE kits could adhere to white tops and black shorts or leggings, and please be mindful as we enter into summer weather conditions (sun creams, hats etc.) Your continued cooperation is greatly appreciated. Diolch.

IMPORTANT

Please remember the important information issued by letter recently regarding the school's 'Drop off and Collection Policy'. We are reinforcing the 'Stranger Danger' message to all of our pupils and families. Over the coming weeks, our PCSO will be visiting the school to talk to children about safe play in our locality.

Y5 & Y6 Consent for Walking Home

Please remember, only children in Year 5 & Year 6 are permitted to walk home after school has received written consent from their parents. The letter sent home also contained details of our policy regarding requirements for adults collecting children who do not have parental responsibility.

This is an important message.

Please be vigilant and ensure that children have clear boundaries when travelling between home and school and playing out during the evenings and weekends / holidays. Diolch.

BIPS e-Cadets

What do we think?

“I like being an eCadet because I like keeping people safe online and keeping myself safe.”

“I love being an eCadet I learn new things all the time about how to stay safe on the internet.”

“Whooohoo. I just love it so much I'm going to explode with safety rules.”

“Love it! Being an eCadet gives so much opportunities for us and many other people.”

Top safety tip!

It is so important to have an honest and open conversation about using technology safely. Set agreed rules and boundaries with your child and if they are on social media always be their friend so you can check in now and again. Enjoy the video to find out about what cyber bullying is https://youtu.be/6ctd75a7_Yw

Please always check they are happy on line.

Dosbarth Derw’s ‘Magical Reporter’ News....

Bore Da all! Lets find out what our learners have been up to this week...

The main event for the whole school has been our exciting new topic 'Capture a Moment in Time'. All the classes have been enjoying trips to St Fagans to find their building and find out about the history of who lived there.

Dosbarth Helygen and Dosbarth Bedwen also enjoyed their collaborative project, finding out about the different kinds of plants we have in our school garden. The children really enjoyed working together and especially working in our wonderful Eco Lodge!

New friends peer learning in our outdoor classroom!

Dosbarth Mesen have also been busy gardeners this week, and they are so pleased with how well their classroom plants are growing.

Look out for more news next week! Diolch, George.
