DofE Expedition
Students did amazingly well in the Peak District for their Expedition. The campsite in Hope had the most amazing views. All students had two routes to walk and were packed up and sent off in their groups to make the hikes all by themselves. The weather was kind apart from very windy conditions. The rain came but soon got blown away. The AAPs (approved activity providers) kept commenting on our wonderful students and said they were all a delight.
Staff also got their walking boots on to experience the hike and enjoyed seeing students along the way. 481m was the peak height of Mam Tor. A long way up and a long way down! Around 60,000 steps were walked over the two days. Well done to everyone for passing it and making great memories. Mr Marshall
Year 7 Residential to Dorset
Year 7 had an absolute blast on their 3 night residential in Dorset. The setting, the sea view, the weather and the fun packed activities made it a great trip. Everyone got involved in the dragon boat racing at the marina and the chanting and sound of the boat oars could be heard all the way back to dry land! Students pushed themselves and each other to take part in all what was on offer; from archery to raft building and the heights of a zip wire. Everyone came back with a sunny glow and tired legs. It was a fairly hilly complex and there were many steps down to the beautiful beach and then back up! Well done Year 7.
Buzzing for Summer
Ellie Crookes in Year 7 brightened Mrs Donlan's week with a gift of one of her pots of honey. How lovely and thoughtful, therefore we wanted to share Ellie's beekeeping story and she has very kindly told us all about it:
Hi! I’m Ellie and I’m a beekeeper. I have eight hives in total. I feel passionate about saving the bees and about honey! My bees are very gentle and calm. Every hive has a queen bee, worker bees (girl bees) and drone bees (boys bees!) Did you know drone bees can’t sting you?!
We have asked Ellie if we can buy some honey from her for our HIVE, which is our intervention room within school, so students can enjoy Ellie's fresh honey when spending time there and she has very kindly agreed. What an amazing young lady!
Archie's Big Sleep Out - update
On Saturday 3rd June, I reached my target of one year sleeping in a tent. I have managed to raise over £1800 for the Disasters and Emergency Committee (DEC). I am proud to have supported people affected by the floods in Pakistan as well as the Earthquake victims in Turkey & Syria.
Here are some highs and lows of my year:
- Highs
- Finding a chicken asleep on my pillow.
- Waking up with snow all around my tent.
- Having my friends over to camp out for the year celebration.
- Thunderstorms!
- Lows
- My tent collapsed and ripped under the weight of snow.
- The temperature low of -7c
- Burning myself on my hot-water bottle
- Carrying my bedding in and out every day.
After sleeping on a mattress on the Year 7 residential, I decided it was time to call it a day and return inside – to the warmth and my comfy bed! I would like to thank everyone for their support, it really helped keep me going. Archie https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Archiesbigsleepout
Fantastic Fundraising
A huge well done to Daniel and Emily Ahearne, who managed to raise £55 for their Feed the Hungry charity cake sale for their scout group by baking and bringing in cakes to school.
As a whole 11th Hinckley Scout group managed to raise enough money to pack 5000 individual meals. Daniel and Emiy would like to say a big thank you to the staff who bought cakes.
News from Performing Arts
End of Year Showcase
It is amazing to be back in the swing of a normal school year in Performing Arts with the End of Year Showcase completing the year in style. It is always a pleasure to work with students that have such a passion for Performing Arts with a number of students performing in all three disciplines across the year.
We want to thank parents and carers for their support, which allows students to attend rehearsals and encourages them to get involved. We look forward to next year and invite any students wanting to get involved to give it a go. These guys did!!!
Drama
Drama club has really excelled this year with old faces returning to us for their final year (Year 9s) and lots of new energy and talents brought in by the Year 7s. I would personally like to thank each and every one of you for the time, effort and dedication you have put into being a member of this club.
Drama club treated their audience to a classic spy tale spoof including your typical cunning villains (or not so cunning in some cases), awesome gadgets, heroes and their sidekicks. This year they were given a huge amount to learn and rose to the challenge! It is also worth mentioning the skills and organisation of the backstage team, without whom, the performance could not have been such a success.
I really look forward to working with the drama club next year and hope to see everyone who was in our end of year show returning for our Christmas production (TBC). Thanks everyone, have a well earned restful summer!
(Drama club is open to all abilities in Year 7, 8 and 9 and takes place at lunchtime.)
Dance
The dancers at TMBS never fail to deliver and this year required a quick turn around and fewer rehearsals than usual due to trips and other things going on at the end of the year. Linking in with Mr Gillespie's Spy Games, this was taken as inspiration for a Mission Impossible themed dance. All the KS3 Dancers did an amazing job and it certainly came together at the last minute.
KS4 Dancers were supporting the KS3 Dancers again in rehearsals and it is always such a help and much appreciated but they did want to get in on the performing action on this occasion and performed their GCSE Dance Performance Piece and a self choreographed spy themed trio that were performed to the highest standard.
As an additional bit of Dance a number of KS3 Dancers asked if they could do solo or duo performances and let’s just say the standard of GCSE Dancers over the next few years is going to be something to look forward to, they were amazing!
Music
The orchestra, singing club and Year 10 band as always put on a fantastic performance, backed by the newly installed black backdrop curtain in the snack canteen. Thank you to Mr Palmer, whose bottled water supply needed to be used due to the heat, but it did not detract from the array of pieces on offer across all groups. Thank you to Miss Abbott and Miss Mistry who also performed with the orchestra and who support Mr Morrow with this every week.
This year has again seen a wide array of Music performances out and about in the community made possible by the passion and dedication of our students but also the commitment and dedication of a fantastic team. A big part of that team is Mr Morrow who has been the Music teacher at TMBS for the last 7 years. In that time he has taken Music at TMBS from strength to strength, building on results, with last year seeing the best results ever in GCSE Music and providing so many opportunities for the students. We have been so lucky to have him as part of the team. Mr Morrow will be moving onto pastures new at the end of the year, to pursue A-Level teaching and other opportunities. He will be sadly missed but we wish him all the best and thank him for everything he has done during his time at TMBS.

PE News
Girls' rounders
On Monday 12th June 2023 the Year 9 girls' rounders team headed off to Saint Martins in Stoke Golding for their annual tournament. We took a squad of 12 players which included:
- Bowler - Erinn Mushrow
- Backstop - Abi Skinner
- 2nd post - Cara Christellow/Faye Skinner
- 4th post - Rose Harris
- Outfield - Emily Jeffers (Captain)/Grace Petcher/Meg Skinner/Cerys Ward/Amelia Withers/Olivia Graham/Honey Abbott
Only 9 players are allowed on the pitch per game so each player had a minimum two games. The tournament was organised in a round robin format. We played Dixie first and settled into the game quickly with some excellent batting and fielding. Dixie were strong batting but our outfield covered each other well to hold out for a victory.
We then played Saint Martins (the hosts) who were our toughest opponents of the evening. They were strong both in the field and batting. However TMBS had some superb catches and came out 11-6 winners.
With 2 victories in the bag we moved to pitch 2 to play Heath Lane and again put on a fabulous performance to come out winners.
We then stayed on pitch two to play our final fixture against Redmoor to secure a convincing tournament win. We won the match after a slower start than usual and some excellent fielding from the Redmoor side.
Congratulations to all of our wonderful players. Undefeated on the night. Hinckley and Bosworth Champions 2023.
Athletics
The Summer Term returned and brought with it the start of the Athletics season in PE. Despite it being one of the wettest seasons we have experienced; the students have put in some amazing performances during their 6 week unit of lessons. Students’ times and distances across the disciplines have been recorded and used to create our school leaderboard. By using this data staff could easily select teams for the Area Athletics Meet. This took place at the Pingles Athletics track in Nuneaton on Thursday 25th May 2023. TMBS selected a full squad of Under 13s, (Year 7) Junior (Years 8 and 9) and Intermediate (Year 10) girls and boys. We took a total of 64 students who were a credit to themselves and the school. Also, many thanks to all the staff that assisted on the day.
As in previous years, there were some outstanding performances and we finished the day with many top 3 finishes. TMBS have historically had an amazing record of doing well at this competition, and were again victorious with the KS3 team finishing in 1st place, and the KS4 team finishing in 2nd place.

Following on from her success at Area Sports and from her performances through her Club, Sophia Wrightam in Year 9 qualified to represent Leicestershire at the English Schools National Track & Field competition in the Junior Girls (U15) 300m. This competition took place from 30 June - 1 July at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Her older sister and former TMBS student Isabella Wrightam, also competed in the Senior Girls 3,000m.
Sophia had a great 2 days at the competition. She ran really well in her 300m heat on the Friday, looking really strong, and secured a new PB. She was also selected for the mixed relays on the Saturday at the close of the championships. She loved the experience, and it has encouraged her to aim to qualify again next year. Her new PB also means she has now met the standard to compete in the English Athletics National Championships at the end of August. Well done to both Sophia and Isabella!
We are looking forward to our final action on the Athletics field with our annual Sports Days in the last week of term. Good luck to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing some fantastic performances.
Have a fabulous summer! Don’t forget to keep the PE staff informed of all your sporting achievements outside of school so that we can all celebrate your success. Mrs Harris
Liam's Football Journey
I have been a signed player for the Aston Villa Foundation for the last 4 years. I also train on a Saturday morning at the FA Para Hub which is all about my development, through this I also get invited to the Regional emerging talent program (RETP) this is where I play among many others with similar disabilities to myself. Once this has been played I will receive feedback from the coaches regarding how I played and if I need to improve on anything. The RETP is run by a number of different coaches from the England Para teams. After doing a number of regional hubs there is a chance of moving up to the national hubs and then onto playing for the England CP (cerebral palsy) Para team. The RETP hubs are based in Bedworth and also the England’s training ground (St Georges Park).
Over the last few months I have also joined the West Bromwich Albion men’s CP team which will help me to progress from child to adult (over 16s) football.
Through Aston Villa I have played a number of tournaments and festivals which we have won 4 out of 6 trophies so far this season, this includes league matches. The 2 leagues we play in are called the Birmingham Ability Counts League and the Sandwell Inclusion League
- Mosley League - Won
- Sandwell League - Won
- Portway Tournament - Got to semi final
- Manchester Tournament - Got to semi finals
- Northampton town festival - Won
- Wolverhampton - Won
Here are some of our results - I'm in the A team:
I still look forward to playing in the RETP at the end of July and also the Norwich festival in August. A big well done to Liam for these accomplishments so far and we wish him the best of luck as he continues his football journey.

County Cricket Summer Camps

Summer Safety
E-Safety
The internet, social media, apps, gaming platforms the list goes on. But do you know what is out there? Have you heard your child mention a certain app or site and wondered what it is? What are they accessing? It is important that you are talking to your child about e-safety and have an understanding about what they are accessing, but that can be confusing.
There are lots of links on the school website to recommended sites and tips for parents in the useful info tab. But some things to think about:
Expressing ourselves and interacting online can be fun - but only if it's safe for everyone. The social networking platform Amino offers opportunities to exchange views on countless hobbies and interests. Natinal Online Safety have produced this helpful factsheet for parents.
Sun Safety
It is the time of the year where we often see students coming into school looking a little red from the sun. Please take some time to have a look and share this information on how to stay sun safe.
Water Safety
As the weather has been so nice lately and hopefully will continue into the summer holidays, we see stories out in the news and on social media about young people who decide to take a swim to cool off and the risks associated with swimming in open water without proper lifeguard supervision. It can also be strong swimmers who get into difficulty. Please see and share the information on water safety.
Reception News
Uniform
We would be very grateful to have items of school uniform and PE kit that have been outgrown. Reception will be pleased to receive good quality items at any point during the term so that they can be loaned out or passed on to our students.
Please ensure that you have read the school uniform policy, which is available on the school website, before purchasing uniform for the new academic year. If you are having difficulties purchasing uniform then we may be able to help you with financial support and we also have a small number of second hand items available. Second-hand uniforms can benefit all families, particularly those on low incomes, and by extending the life of garments, it is more sustainable. Please contact office@tmbs.org.uk for more information.
Being Prepared For School
We want to encourage students to take responsibility for being prepared for school each day. This means students should check their planner each evening to make sure they have what they need for the next day. Please encourage them to double check everything before they leave home in the morning. We appreciate that during the first few weeks there may be things they forget and you may drop them off at reception. However we request that after the first two weeks of school any further items are not dropped off during the school day. Our reception staff have busy roles in school and delivering items to students disrupts the teaching which impacts on everyone in the classroom. Learning from the negative experience of forgetting items will help students develop independence. We thank you for your support in this.
Lost Property
Lost property is held at reception.
Please ensure all items of uniform, coats, shoes, trainers, bags and equipment (including pencil cases, water bottles, aprons and ingredients) are clearly labelled with the student's name. Labelling is very easy to do; simply writing your child’s full name and surname on their items with a laundry marker pen or permanent marker pen will help them to reclaim lost items. Just remember that over time the writing will gradually fade, please check regularly to make sure the name can be read.
At the end of each full term, the lost property contents will be emptied and items will either be recycled for use by TMBS students, donated to charity or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
