Western USA May 2022

During the month of May, the Western USA can be a mixed bag of weather. Almost always you can expect glorious sunny days. This Tesla road trip covered 8 states and thousands of miles and 26 Superchargers.

The San Francisco Bay Area is a great place to start an ambitious trip. The views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city from the Marin Headlands are absolutely stunning.

Northward bound, after a brief stay in Sacramento, wonderful views of the south and north faces of Mount Shasta are just off the Interstate 5.

Crater Lake National Park, in Southern Oregon, gets a fair amount of snow in the winter, but it seemed to be quite a surprise to see several feet of fresh snow in the month of May. The snowy landscape and clear blue sky made for a brilliant and memorable experience.

Getting a personal tour of the Nike International Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon is a special experience. The new Serena Williams and Kobe Bryant buildings, the surrounding gardens, and installations are really something beyond belief.

Montana's Highway 287 on the way to Yellowstone National Park has the most amazing views of the Rocky Mountains.

The wildlife at Yellowstone National Park is abundant and unpredictable, as with spring comes new born creatures. Violent attacks by predators and the mothers that protect them are commonplace. The park is located on top of a super volcano and there is geothermal activity everywhere. Mammoth Hot Springs is a fantastic and ever changing landscape located at the north entrance of the park.

The road from West Yellowstone to Jackson Hole, Wyoming through Idaho is one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the USA. The vast farmland and snow capped mountains are gorgeous.

The Grand Teton National Park is located just minutes from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Staying in trendy Jackson can be very pricey, but the convenience of being near this glorious mountain range for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer is worth every penny.

Bryce Canyon National Park is one of the most vivid and stunning places on the planet. The park offers hundreds of miles of hiking trails through the brilliantly colored maze like hoodoos. The views are just as fantastic from the easy accessible parking lots too.

Another beautiful drive is Highway 89 from Bryce through the Dixie National Forest, passing by Kanab, Utah and on to Page, Arizona. Just off the highway near Page is Horseshoe Bend, one of the most iconic landscapes in the West.

Phoenix was the final stop on this amazing road trip that covered about 3,000 miles (4,800km). Despite the urban sprawl, there are a lot of places to hike in the surrounding Sonora Desert. June is a little late to enjoy the desert bloom, but the flora and fauna not only survives the 100+ degree temperatures, they thrive.
