Fur Angels Visit Leonard

Mrs. Starn (third grade teacher) and her certified therapy dog, Zoe, came for a visit Tuesday morning! Zoe was able to spend time with some of our kindergarten and first grade students today. It's quite amazing to see the immediate affect spending just a few minutes with a therapy dog can make on a person. Our kiddos were all smiles as they loved on Zoe! Thank you, Mrs. Starn, for sharing Zoe with us!

Thanksgiving Parade in Media!

Our second and third graders are exploring a unit in Media that is centered around the Thanksgiving parade. Students first read texts that detailed the origin of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. Focusing on the immigrant experience, students discussed how Tony Sarg (the founder of the parade) was an immigrant who wanted to create a way to celebrate the holidays that blended traditions from his home country with new ideas from America. Kids stepped inside the characters from the book to think deeply about what the immigrants were thinking, feeling, and caring about at that time in history. Kids then used materials in the maker space to design their own float. Groups attached their floats to a Bee Bot (a beginner coding robot). Once the floats were lined up on the road, students programmed their robots to travel a given distance down the street. After their first iterations, students adjusted the course and their robots to improve performance. Finally, they took a video of the second run using a green screen. The older students will edit the video so that it plays over the backdrop of Broadway St. in NYC! Such an incredible learning experience for our students!

Third graders from Mrs. Perez's class enjoy their Thanksgiving Parade.

First Lego League Participates in SharkFest!

Our Leonard Robotics teams participated in the annual SharkFest competition this past weekend. Our teams have been working since August on their presentations. All teams did an amazing job and our Supercharged Leopards (Soyheon, Shriyan, Simran, Pranav, Alex, and Evelyn) even qualified for the state competition on December 11! Congratulations to all who participated!
