Kindergarten

In Mathematics, KD have been learning about comparing the length of different items. They chose a stick and then had to draw a flower that is the same or equal length as the stick, then a flower that is longer and one that is shorter than the stick. Students then labelled the flowers E for equal/same, L for longer and S for shorter.

KT have been learning how to code, using BeeBots in STEM lessons. We were able to make the BeeBot move forwards, backwards, left and right.

Kindergarten have been cooperative, creative and collaborative during Fun Friday time.

Principal's Message

World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5 June each year. Getting out into the natural environment helps children to appreciate the natural world and become more aware of ways to protect it. It’s also healthy to be out in the open air and to be active. These experiences encourage children to take note of the small things in nature, see what sparks their curiosity and problem solve ways to help. Below is the link to the NSW Department of Education’s resource booklet for families titled, ‘Caring for the Environment’.

The booklet looks at ways that children and families can help the environment. There are many play experiences that can be offered in the home to support children’s awareness of the natural environment and ways to protect it.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week Assembly

Congratulations to our Year 6 Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander students - Mason L, Jahmane R, Andie G and Celeste E who did a great job running our National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week Assembly. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 attended, along with some of our parents. Thank you to Ms Wright and Miss Paron for organising our K - 6 Sorry Day and Reconciliation Assembly last Friday.

National Sorry Day marks the day that the landmark ‘Bringing Them Home’ report was tabled in Federal Parliament in 1997.

It is a time to reflect on the Government policies of forced child removal and to acknowledge the trauma experienced by Stolen Generations as a direct result. It is also a time to recognise the strength and resilience of the survivors and their descendants who continue to live and deal with complex inter-generational effects of these practices. It is a time to recognise the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the power of saying Sorry.

Reconciliation needs to live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. In playing our part, we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and futures.

Buddy Friendship Program

All new students that come to our school are partnered up with several friends to play with on day one, before they go out to play. The students generally maintain these friendships, plus go on to make other new friendships. The Buddy Friendship Program is a highly valued and much appreciated initiative which is a great strength of Byron Bay Public school.

We also have a Buddy Bench where students can go and sit if they are looking for a friend or would like to meet up with a new buddy or previous acquaintance. The Buddy Bench are located next to the administration building, facing the COLA and in the back playground.

School Uniform and Student Assistance

We continue to promote our school pride through our school uniform and thank all parents and carers for their cooperation and efforts to ensure our students look great. We stand out in the community as a school that has high expectations, being one that really cares about our students. When it comes to school uniforms, we can provide financial assistance to families in need, it’s as simple as asking for the Student Assistance paperwork at the office. You can call in and collect it or we can email it to you, alternately we can send it home with one of your children. Student Assistance is also available for excursions and incursions, it’s there to support student access to all areas of the curriculum.

Public Speaking Competition

Congratulations to Halo T, Gwendolyn G, Celeste E and Vilda B who were successful in making it to the next round of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, which will be held at Ocean Shores Public School on the 9 June. They will be representing our school and their own stage at the local final.

Congratulations also to all the finalists who presented their speeches. The quality was high and the students explored some complex topics.
