Hear from a panel of experts, then enjoy a cuppa and meet other parents.

Thank you to all those who responded to our recent survey. The issues raised through the survey has helped us formulate the topics for the Information Evening; school life, phones, relationships, consent, mental health, the teenage brain, drugs and alcohol.

See you there!

Burra Jurra - Seashore Mural

A big thanks to Nickolla Clark, local Indigenous artist for the amazing mural she has just completed on the wall in our basketball courts.

The artwork is similar to what appears on our new school hoodies. It depicts a seashore landscape - Burra Jurra. The piece has shorelines, rocks and air bubbles depicting the water washing over the sand on our coastline. The artwork also has yugari - pippi shells, a common food for Bundjalung people and is a meeting place where people sit and share together. Nickolla hopes that our school community can enjoy the artwork depicting our backyard. It is a special place of Arakwal country for herself and her family.

As you drive past the school be sure to cast your eyes toward courts and check it out! We are so lucky to have such inspiring artwork on display in our school!

BBHS Cross Country Carnival

Another great day of sunshine greeted us for our annual Cross Country Carnival. It is always rewarding for the students and teachers to be involved in activities outside of the classroom and engage with each other in different ways.

Many thanks to all the students who took part on the day. It was wonderful to see everyone have their moment, racing up the long finish straight - whether it be sprinting for home, moon walking, cartwheeling or dancing! Our students did whatever it took to get a free sausage and an icy pole!

Mr Baker and Mr Black, along with their talented Entertainment Senior crew, once again set up the stage for some great music to entertain all at the end of the carnival. A big thanks to all of them!

The Top 6 runners in each age group have qualified for the Far North Coast Championships to be held at Byron Bay High School on Friday 26 May. Any student who has qualified and does not wish to compete must see Mrs Caoyonan ASAP to withdraw.

BBHS Athletics Carnival

We have fingers crossed for sunny weather for our upcoming annual School Athletics Carnival, which will be held at the Cavanbah Centre.

Date: Wednesday 24 May

Wear: Colour House colours (the brighter the better!)

Food: There will be NO canteen facilities available on the day. However, our Year 12 students will be running their legendary BBQ fundraiser - sausage sandwiches, snow cones and cakes will be available to purchase.

On the day, students will compete in the age group of the AGE THEY TURN THIS YEAR. Age groups range from 12 – 18 years of age. Some events are restricted to certain age groups at Far North Coast level, however we run all events for all age groups at our school carnival.

Parents are very welcome to attend. A program of events will be sent out prior to the day. Any students wishing to nominate for the events that are not run at school, but are run at NSWCHS State Athletics (2km Steeplechase, 200m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, Pentathlon, 12-14 Years Girls 1500m Walk, 12-15 Years Boys 1500m Walk, 15-19 Years 300m Walk) will need to nominate on the day and have evidence of qualifying times in these sanctioned events.

Transport

Buses coming from the North of our Shire will drop off directly at the Cavanbah Centre, where students will meet teachers already at the fields. All other buses will drop to school as normal. At 9:00 am hired buses will transport students from school to the Cavanbah Centre and return them at the end of the day for normal school buses home.

Attendance

The Athletics Carnival is one of the major school events on the calendar and it is expected that students attend. There are plenty of events, both competitive and non-competitive heats and novelty events to keep everyone happy.

Financial literacy workshops

Year 10 students will be taking part in 2 workshops about Making Money Work. The workshops will take place at school on Tuesday 13 and 27 June.

The Making Money Work modules by Ecstra explore ways to make money, to help build financial independence and how to navigate the workplace, including understanding rights at work and managing superannuation and tax. Financial education and learning about money is a lifelong journey and we aim to assist our students to learn key money skills, to be confident making financial decisions and to plan their financial future.

Workshop A: Students will delve into the world of work, looking at the different ways and approaches to make money. They will discuss their rights as an employee and how to have difficult conversations at work.

Workshop B: Students will gain an awareness of their personal brand and learn practical skills, including reading pay slips and understanding tax and superannuation.

We look forward to our Year 10 students taking part in this valuable program.

iRest fundraiser for Year 12, 2023

Parent meditation session

Since 2017, Claire Smith has been teaching our Year 11 and 12 students at Byron High School a type of meditation that has been proven to work. The meditation is called iRest which stands for Integrative Restoration and is very popular with our students. It helps them to release stress and focus during the hectic final years of high school.

To assist Year 12 with their Formal fundraising efforts, Claire is very graciously offering an iRest session for BBHS parents. All proceeds from the Parent session will be donated to the Year 12 cohort.

The Parent Session details are as follows:

  • 20 places available for BBHS parents.
  • Thursday 18 May, from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, upstairs in the school Common Room.
  • $30.00 for the session
  • Registrations are essential as places are limited. Please contact the school office by phoning 6685 8188 to secure your place in this session and for payment details.

Below are some iRest testimonials from our Senior students:

I absolutely adore iRest, it’s genuinely the best part of my school week because it gives me a well needed break from my busy week. Claire just has a way of completely draining you from stress. I absolutely recommend this program to any school considering it.

Cheyenne Peled - Year 12 2023

"Claire comes to our school every Tuesday and Thursday and we are all invited to join her well planned classes and enjoy her hospitality. During the sessions she talks us through positive mindsets and how to remain relaxed and concentrated during these stressful years. I, and a lot of peers at school really appreciate her contribution to our life during assessment periods.

There are a lot of people who regularly attend her seasons and find it very helpful to have the guidance and structure in their school week. Claire is a wonderful addition to Byron Bay High School, and I always look forward to my sessions with her."

Luca Greig - Year 12 2023

During Year 11 and 12 at Byron Bay High School I attended the wonderful iRest sessions run by Claire. These sessions offered a safe space, facilitating mindfulness and rest practice. The approachable iRest techniques offered by Claire helped me not only during the sessions but enabled me to include mindfulness practice within my daily life; particularly through a stressful phase in my life.
