ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS
APH students completed a semester full of challenging courses and engaging topics. With classes including Drama of Politics, Social Justice, World Humanities and Critical Exploration of Modern Issues, our students thought critically, worked collaboratively, and solved problems contextually. Below, we've highlighted some of our student work.
This Is the America I Live In
Sociology
When sociology students recently studied social issues affecting the USA, they showcased what they learned by focusing on a topic that resonated with them and creating a project exploring that topic. With a gallery of original photography, a cartoon strip, and many other imaginative projects, students each infused their own passion and creativity into their culminating presentation.
Students Visit Seth Moulton's Office
Drama of Politics
APH students toured Seth Moulton's Salem office and met with his team to better understand how local concerns are addressed at the federal level. Seth Moulton is a Marine Corps officer and a member of the US House of Representatives.
Creating Designs with Equations
Pre-Calculus
Math and art are seldom found in the same classroom, but our students combined the two in their Pre-Calculus class. APH students first explored different types of functions and then chose a design to recreate completely out of functions! Desmos featured Pre-Calculus student Kathryn's design of Mickey Mouse as one of their staff picks! Take a look at her design and our other students' in the slideshow below.
Building a Legacy of Learning at APH
Humanities
Humanities teacher Mrs. Billings developed a project for her students that married the goal of assessing them as readers and writers and the creation of a legacy of reading and writing at the school. Students and staff alike have caught the vision and reading has become a key part of APH.
The Arts at APH
Music
APH has an incredible music and theater program, with a Drama Club, an A Cappella Group, a Choral Ensemble, Rock Band, and a Classical Ensemble. All musical groups performed at our recent Christmas Concert.

The Academy's Drama Club presented "Shakespeare's Women," a collection of scenes from Shakespeare's plays, which feature women. With appearances from Lady Macbeth, Juliet, and other prominent Shakespearean characters, our students put on a spectacular performance.

Athletics
APH fielded a variety of team sports including cross-country, soccer, volleyball, and field hockey. We enjoyed watching our students as they played with sportsmanship and teamwork and are looking forward to our winter season of basketball, swimming, and skiing! In the spring, our students will participate in softball, track and field, and lacrosse.
Special Events & News
APH Students Participate in Lincoln Center Showcase
We are so proud of our students, Eve P. and Elaina T., who are part of the dance troupe from Cape Ann Center for Dance. They have been invited by the Performing Art Educators to perform at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on January 14th.

The Salem News recently visited The Academy at Penguin Hall, observing our students at work, speaking to faculty members, and experiencing our wonderful campus.
Yale's "Something Extra" Visits APH
Yale's premier all-women's a Cappella group Something Extra visited The Academy at Penguin Hall Today. Not only did these educated, enlightened and empowered women perform but also joined us for lunch and a discussion about Yale, choosing a major and transitioning from high school to college.
Grace Kelly Inspires APH
International recording star and saxophone player for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Grace Kelly, visited APH and spoke to our students, inspiring them to pursue their dreams. Whether she is playing the saxophone as part of the band on the Stephen Colbert Show or speaking to thousands in her sold-out concerts or speaking to our group of students, Grace Kelly’s enthusiasm and love for music is contagious.
West Side Story Captivates APH Students
APH students and faculty had the pleasure of experiencing West Side Story at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, MA. After finishing reading Romeo & Juliet in their Humanities classes, our students excitedly made comparisons throughout the show. Our whole school community had the opportunity to meet the Sharks and the Jets after the show.
APH Service Days
At APH, our students participate in many service initiatives and regularly give back to the community. We joined St. John's Prep for their annual Ryken Afternoon of Service and have also volunteered at IMEC and Haven from Hunger.
Before the holidays, students assembled Blessing Bags during our all-campus retreat. We asked that students share these bags with people in need during their holiday travels. The bags contained mints, chapstick, hand warmers, granola bars, lotion, and a personal note. This gave us a moment to reflect and appreciate all of our blessings and the power we have to make a difference in our community.
Aspiring APH Journalists Visit the Boston Globe
APH students attended the "Women in Journalism and Media" event at the The Boston Globe. Along wiith students and teachers from across the state, the event gave students the opportunity to hear from and discuss women in journalism and media with a panel of award winning Boston Globe journalists- Maria Cramer, Shirley Leung, and Cristela Guerra.
