Abkhazia welcomes 2022: what do people expect from it and how will they remember their 2021?

Madina Twanba, sommelier

"This year I managed to reach a new level in promoting wine from the Abkhaz grape varieties of our VineAbkhazia brand. We grow grapes ourselves, make wine, cognac, chacha, and package them too. Literally a week before the New Year, we decided to open a selling standvat the station Guma, a new cultural site in Sukhum. I consider this my main achievement. I also spent the New Year's Eve there"

Sharida Tuzhba, curator of exhibitions

“I managed to realize myself professionally in a new field. When you look back at the previous year, you always feel like you could have done more. But I am grateful for this year and I am sure that in 2022 I will be able to do even more. It is not easy to work at Guma art platform, I always have to deal with creative people - but it is very interesting. I see a real benefit from what we are doing there. I celebrated New Year in my father's house, in the village, by the fireplace, with my family, and with a glass of homemade wine in my hand"

Valery Curascua, movie director

"This year there have been many changes in my life. I quit my job in television. I almost finished renovating my Aamta studio. The product that we are making with my colleagues has entered new spaces, previously unknown to me - the Internet. It is not easy to undergo serious changes when you are 70 years old, but it is even more difficult to work under the leadership of people who dictate their terms to you and do not take a creatove idea into account. Now I am my own boss, I can enjoy the freedom that the Internet gives"

Alias Ubiria, driver

“The year was very difficult. I had a hard time with COVID-19. I had to spend a lot of energy and money on treatment. My wife and I are making plans for the next summer, as our family business is related to tourism. I hope the coming year will bring joy and financial stability. We had enough losses this year"

Lyuba Vartagava, pensioner

"It was a completely unremarkable year. It is difficult for me to single out any special events - perhaps the birth of a third grandson. Another boy in our family. I remember the hot summer and crowded beaches. The last time I saw this amount of tourists in Sukhum was in 1980s. Well, the winter did not start very pleasantly - constant blackouts do not let us to relax. The water was turned off, then the electricity. But now everything seems to be stabilized. Hopefully next year these inconveniences will become a distant memory"
