Humanity & Inclusion Virtual Exhibition

Co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, Humanity & Inclusion (the new name of Handicap International) is a 40-year-old independent and impartial organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work alongside people with disabilities and individuals living in situations of extreme hardship, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.

With local partners, we run programs in health and rehabilitation and social and economic integration. We work with local authorities to clear landmines and other war debris and to prevent mine-related accidents through education. We respond quickly and effectively to natural and civil disasters to limit serious and permanent injuries and to assist survivors' recovery and reintegration. We advocate for the universal recognition of the rights of people with disabilities through national planning and advocacy.

To be a girl with disabilities from West Africa: The education situation in question

Despite significant improvements in access to education over the last decade, 262 million children, adolescents and young people were out of school in 2016, or one in five. Of all the regions of the world, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of out-of-school children. Of the 63 million out-of-school children of primary school age, 34 million, or more than half, live in sub-Saharan Africa.1 More generally, one in three children, adolescents and young people is out of school in sub-Saharan Africa – with girls being more likely than boys to be out of school.
