Overdrive Magazines
Thanks to Clifton Park, Crandall, and Saratoga Springs magazines are now available to all Overdrive and Libby users. Previously Clifton Park, Crandall, and Saratoga had magazines available for their users. We discovered that if we purchased magazines for the system there would be cost savings for each of these libraries. So THANK YOU! There are currently over 4k titles.
The magazine lending model is much different than the typical ebook lending model. Borrowers are able to borrow copies instantly without being placed on a holds list. Borrowers are also able to borrow previous issues.
Now with all that being said, there is an Overdrive magazine update to this update:
In December 2022, we received notice of a required digital lending model change for The Economist.
New requirements by The Economist restrict readers who borrow a title to a maximum 24-hour lending period. After 24 hours, a reader who wants to continue to read the same issue can no longer access it remotely. For a reader to continue access to the issue, they must visit the library to renew access.
OverDrive has decided not to support this change in access. As a result, all editions of The Economist will be removed from OverDrive Magazine collections effective February 1, 2023. The last issue available for readers to borrow will be January 28, 2023. All back issues will also be removed from collections on February 1.
We are adding new magazines to the collection regularly, including Fortune which is coming soon. We will continue to find ways to increase the value of your always available OverDrive Magazine collection.
Overdrive Recommendations
As of today, Libby released a new deep search feature to enable users to discover more content, including titles not yet in your digital collection. For libraries, this will provide powerful insights into what your users want to read—a top request from librarians and readers alike. Hundreds of libraries and their users are reporting the benefits of these features and data as part of an initial pilot earlier this year.
Overview of deep search and Notify Me
Libby experience—Deep search & Notify Me tags
This feature connects users to all the content they are interested in, without leaving your library’s collection. There will be two ways for users to run a deep search and discover titles that are not yet in your collection:
- If a user searches for a title, author, or series and it returns no results, Libby will automatically display relevant titles that are not yet in your collection but are available in the full OverDrive Marketplace catalog.
- If a user runs a search that returns fewer than 100 results, the user can tap the filter button ( Filter ) to expand their search across the wider catalog.
From the expanded search results, users will see relevant results from their active library, other saved libraries, and titles not offered by any of their libraries. If a title is not offered by any of their libraries, the user can add a Notify Me tag to be notified if it is available in the future.
Important note
Users will only see titles that are available for your library to purchase in OverDrive Marketplace.
Recommend to Library (RTL) sunset
As communicated earlier this year, the Recommend to Library (RTL) feature will be sunset as part of the OverDrive app sunset at the end of April. Beginning March 21, messaging throughout the RTL user flow will inform users that they can use Libby to discover and express interest in titles that are not yet available at your library.
