Welcome to the Innovation Newsletter

March 2022

Save the date! 16 May 2022

Lincolnshire Institute of Technology partners will come together on the 16 May 2022 at Lincoln College to showcase their work in developing talent and skills for the region. This celebratory event will be opened to all and we encourage all partners to join and bring their colleagues, students and prospective students.

Look out for the Research ‘corner’ where colleagues from the University of Lincoln will be showcasing some of our innovative projects.

We would like to encourage as many of you as possible to attend and take the opportunity to network with our partners and students. This promises to be a great event to finally come together in a ‘post-Covid’ world.

Siemens ‘connects’ with IoTs

For the past two-and-a-half years, Siemens’ Connected Curriculum initiative has partnered with universities to help equip graduates with a broad range of cutting-edge, industry-relevant skills.

Primarily, Connected Curriculum is focused on engineering and links a range of topics, including software engineering, mechanical production, automation and PLC programming.

Under the leadership of former FE assistant principal, Dr Steve Jones, the scheme has, to date, worked with students from Level 4 upwards.

Now expanding to include the further education sector, a new link has been forged with an Institute of Technology (IoT). This will bring on board three FE colleges and four more universities, with additional IoT partnerships in the pipeline.

Recognising the important role colleges play in preparing the next generation of technically skilled workers, Jisc is encouraging FE leaders to link curricula with the emerging technologies of the fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0). Connected Curriculum fits perfectly with that aim.

Grants for activity engaging with Research

There is still time to work on an application for a PEARL grant. PEARL grants support public engagement with research and might be a good opportunity for FE colleagues to work with University of Lincoln staff in promoting the work of the IoT.

If you are interested, please check: Apply Now | PEARL and contact Pilar for an informal chat.

Transferring knowledge between education providers and employers

Do you want to develop new products and/or processes, introduce new technologies, entering new markets, change your business culture and/or increase your business sustainability to enable your business to grow but lack the key expertise in house? If so, a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) may be able to help!

KTPs is an Innovate UK funded initiative that supports businesses to improve their competitiveness, productivity and performance by establishing a 3-way partnerships between a business that lacks a specific expertise to implement their strategic growth plans; a University that has the ‘know-how’ to do it; and an Associate who is recruited and placed at the business premises to transfers knowledge and embed new capabilities into the business leading to significant commercial impact.

These projects are highly subsidised by Innovate UK, provide cost-effective access to the latest cutting-edge research and University facilities, designed to drive competitive advantage through innovation and Intellectual Property and may be eligible for R&D Tax Credits.

The University of Lincoln has a proven track record of successfully securing and delivering these projects in partnership with regional and national businesses and have been recently awarded two new KTPs surrounding Net Zero in partnership with Eminox Limited and Inprotec Limited.

For more information about KTPs please click here or contact the University of Lincoln’s KTP Manager, Marta, to discuss your ideas.
