Mayfield News

A message from the academy principal

This newsletter celebrates the end of an extraordinary year for the #TeamMayfield community. Our amazing staff and students have turned this year’s challenges into wonderful opportunities and experiences. Please take a moment, if you haven’t done so already, to thank the Mayfield staff who have kept our students and community safe, well and learning this term.

I am immensely proud of each and every student, from Year 7 starting out on their Team Mayfield adventure to Year 11 preparing for their next steps.

We are all looking forward to the promise of the new year, what January 2022 will hold for us all, I hope you enjoy this newsletter of all we have achieved together - united as one family – #TeamMayfield.

We pleased to premier our new promo video; we hope you like it! A huge thank you to all the students and staff involved.

Parental Communication Survey

As we head towards the end of the year, we are thinking about how we can continue to make improvements in our communications with you, our parents and carers.

We would really appreciate your time in completing this short survey to hear your thoughts on how the academy currently communicates updates and news, and to welcome any suggestions you may have. The form should take no longer than 5 minutes and your feedback is anonymous. Thank you.

Oasis Horizons

Oasis Academy Mayfield provides an iPad to every student and teacher as part of its Horizons programme

Mayfield has now fully completed the roll out of Oasis Horizons scheme, which has provided an iPad to every student and teacher, not only to ensure that all students have an equality of access to education, but part of a wider strategy that involves improving the curriculum offered by the school - and closing the digital divide.

The devices will support every student on their learning journey regardless of their starting points, removing many of the barriers some young people face in accessing learning resources outside of school.

Every student will be taught how to make the most of their device, and how to look after it. If an iPad is reported missing it can be locked remotely, and then have its location tracked.

A number of students have commented saying how much they are enjoying using their devices and parents from across all year groups have thanked the academy for providing their child with the technology to learn.

UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Host City Celebration

On Tuesday 6th July 2021, six Oasis Academy Mayfield students were invited to attend a celebration event of one year to go until the start of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. Wednesday 7th July 2021 marked the One Year to Go until we host our first of three games at St Marys in Southampton.

The event took place at the Bargate monument with a number of women and girls already involved in football locally and who also represent the five key pillars of our legacy programme. With less than 365 days to go to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 football tournament, it is really exciting to see the opportunities that will be on offer for women and girls in the City, to be involved in football in a variety of ways over the next year.

Oasis Academy Mayfield pupil recognised nationally for dedication to studies

A year 10 student from Oasis Academy Mayfield, has been recognised as a national winner for his competence and commitment to studies.

Charlie House was announced as the national winner of the Competence Award at the 2021 Oasis National Student Awards. Chosen as the overall winner for the secondary phase, he received a special trophy at the event on Friday 9th July.

From over 260 nominations Charlie was chosen for his incredible dedication to study and was described as a ‘Lockdown Legend’ by teachers at the academy. He consistently exceeded expectations throughout the pandemic and used his time in lockdown to write a book about World War II.

Claire Taylor, Principal at Oasis Academy Mayfield, commented saying; "I cannot think of a more deserving winner of the competence award, Charlie exemplifies all that it means to be an expert in his field of study, he’s not only dedicated to his own studies but has also recently planned and presented a series of seminars for his tutor group on the Napoleonic Wars! The entire academy community have shown such determination and resilience during the pandemic, and I am incredibly proud of all of them, but today is Charlie’s day."

The awards were part of a bi-annual event, held digitally this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, where young people aged 10-18 from the family of Oasis academies were celebrated for their character, competence, and commitment to community.

Nominated students from across 51 academies gathered online to enjoy an afternoon of professional entertainment, including ariel acrobatics and freestyle football, celebrity congratulations messages from television presenters and blockbuster actors from franchises such as Marvel and Harry Potter, and praise from key leaders within the trust.

Thanks to Sodexo, the key sponsor for the event, every school was also delivered a special afternoon tea hamper for the students to enjoy with their Principal and teachers.

Due to the nature of this year’s event, the trust has also pledged to donate the un-spent sponsorship money from Sodexo, New Combustion and Bulloughs Cleaning Services into fighting food poverty within the communities they serve.

Children in Need

This November, we supported BBC Children In Need and held a non-uniform day. Rather than a monetary donation, we kindly requested that students bring in a food bank donation to be distributed to our local Sholing Food Bank at St Mary’s Church.

Principal, Claire Taylor said;

"We are very proud of the generosity shown by our local community. In this challenging time, it’s humbling to be a part of such a strong community. Thank you for everyone’s support."

5,4,3 Meals – 5 meals, for 4 people, for £3

In March, our friends Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill created five short, easy to follow videos on how to make five meals, for four people – each using ingredients costing just £3!

“We know that this year has been tough in so many ways – not least on people’s bank balance” explains Lewis Collins, ex-Mayfield student and teacher of Food Technology at Lord’s Hill.
“We wanted to create something to help families make their money go further when doing the weekly shop, which is how we came up with 5,4,3 Meals. These meals are easy to follow, taste great and are enough to feed a small family – and they do not cost the earth.”
“We hope families across the Oasis family and beyond give them a try.”

Winner of the Great British Bake Off 2020, Peter Sawkins, gives the idea his seal of approval, recording a short video of support at the beginning of each meal.

You can watch each of the videos here.

Oasis Hub: East Southampton Fayre

Oasis Hub: East Southampton Christmas Fayre - Saturday 27th November

After what seems forever, we have finally managed to hold a community event and what an event it was, buzzing and full of Christmas spirit.

It was wonderful to see the community coming together to support local business and start their Christmas shopping. A huge thank you to all who attended, the stall holders, staff and students from Oasis Academy Sholing and Oasis Academy Mayfield who helped, our wonderful volunteers, the dancers from Sammys Dance and the fabulous Zuma group.

A special thank you must go to Father Christmas and Mrs Christmas, Olaf, Sammy the Saint, The veteran mascot and Trigger the train who made it such a magical event for the youngsters. We have raised £1500 to support our community projects.

The Hub Team wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and look forward to running more community events is in the new year.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Despite a year delay due to the pandemic our incredible Silver Duke of Edinburgh Year 11 teams finally managed to go out to complete their expeditions this July. Walking over 65kms the students excelled, smashing their expedition sections with positivity, team work and the odd bit of mud!

Our practise expedition took us to the New Forest to get lost in the trees and mud, meet a few ponies (and frogs!) and remember how to camp and read a map again. We had lovely weather and an excellent 2 days walking finished in Lyndhust.

For our assessed expedition we ventured to Dorset, and started in Swanage from where the teams walked for 3 big days over the Purbeck hills, taking in Corfe Castle, Old Harry’s Rocks, and a lot of sun before finishing on the beach in Studland bay.

This was the first ever Silver Duke of Edinburgh at Mayfield, and we celebrated by awarding Millicent her award on the beach!

Duke of Edinburgh is once again up and running again from this term at Mayfield, and our year 11 Bronze group has been joined by our year 9 and year 10 joiners. We have been meeting every Friday to do expedition training, which so far has involved the challenge of pitching unknown tents (indoors!) and discovering the joy of a great mug of hot chocolate as we lit camping stoves for the first time. The group is incredible, and we cannot wait for our expeditions next summer!

If your child would like to sign up for Duke of Edinburgh they should speak to Mr Dawkins or Ms Hurd. Duke of Edinburgh runs every Friday from 3-4pm.

Sports Day 2021

In the Summer Term it was fantastic to be able to bring back Sports Day for each year group. Each year group had an afternoon to show off their athletic prowess in Track & Field events to secure points for their tutor group by completing as many events as possible.

It was great to see all students competing together proudly representing their tutor group showing determination to be the best that they could be.

Well done to all competitors and the PE Department cannot wait until next Summer.

Year 8 English

Year 8s have shown real determination in English over the last year. Back in Autumn 2020, we kicked off with Sherlock Holmes, where students became detectives and unpicked the Victorian language of Arthur Conan Doyle. Spring brought us lockdown and Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. Students did brilliantly well despite having to approach a challenging text remotely. Jump forward to the Summer term and George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’. This entertaining novel brought many debates about power and authority. The term has finished off with a dive into Fantasy Fiction and a chance to flex our creative writing muscles.

Food Preparation & Nutrition

Our GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition students have been making the most of the food room since returning to the classroom in March. Well done to you all, you have produced some stunning food. Mrs Gray and Mr Collins are super proud!

Science Club

Students from a range of year groups in KS3 and KS4 have been very busy enjoying the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) theme in the movies from BEng Science. Students have done a range of things including creating pop rockets, chemical eruptions, investigating light waves using geometry skills, creating smartphone projectors and more.

If your child would like to join Science Club they should speak with Ms Levita. Science Club runs every Thursday in the Science labs from 3-4pm.

Textiles Club

Students in Years 9-11 have been making tie dye bags in Textiles Club. We have been focusing on upcycling, recycling and using sustainable materials. So, the tie dye bags were created using old bedsheets and the came from spinach, beetroot, and turmeric to colour the bags.

Next we are designing applique cushions, again made from recycled fabrics from old t-shirts and scrap material. We’re really excited to see what these look like next term!

If your child would like to join Textiles Club, they should speak to Ms Hills. Textiles Club runs every Thursday from 3-4pm in the Art Barn

Kickboxing Club

We have been working on linking a range of punches together to make combinations and starting to develop different kicks that can be used to score points. So far we have been working on the front kick, low thai, mid thai and switch kick. We have also had great fun completing some fitness challenges!

If your child would like to attend kickboxing Club, they should speak to Ms Booth and Ms Warwick. It is suitable for all levels of fitness and all year groups. Kickboxing Club runs every Wednesday 3-4pm in the Drama Studio.

Year 9 Creative Writing Club Magazine

Finally, at the end July, the creative writing club produced a magazine packed full of stories, poems and songs created over the last year.

Abi Palmer, Teacher of English commented; "They have all worked so hard creating this. I am constantly impressed by the bravery and imagination in their writing! I hope you all enjoy reading it."
