Gianna B Art 1 Portfolio / Winter 2022 / Strath Haven H.S.

For this project, we used shading to create and show shape in our pictures. This project was inspired by cubism, which revolutionized art in the 20th century. For this project, I chose to draw a bass guitar in the background, and various music notes as a pattern on top of the guitar. I chose a bass guitar because I play bass guitar, and it's one of my favorite hobbies. I used 2b and 4b pencils to shade the design. Using the different types of pencils was fun because of the various shades I could create with them. To keep the music notes consistent, I traced their designs on thick, hard paper, and cut them with an Xacto knife. It was very tedious to cut out the circle on the half notes, but I'm very happy with how the notes turned out. I really enjoyed making this project. I learned how to shade, and greatly improved my shading over the process of this project. I am very happy with how this project turned out, and had a lot of fun making it.
In this project, we used warm and cool colors to create symmetry. I used radial symmetry for this project. I also used complimentary colors along with the warm/cool colors. I painted a record with music notes around it to show that the record is playing, and to add more detail to the painting. I used primary colors to make all the colors in this project: I mixed the light blue, pinkish red, green, and purple. I tried to paint the record in a circular motion to recreate the lines on a record. I really enjoyed painting this project. It was really fun to paint the yellow background, because I got to paint very big strokes. This was very different to the tiny detail painting I had to do for the music notes and smaller circles. I also enjoyed pulling the tape off of the border at the end, because it created a perfect square, and the painting looks good framed by white. I learned how to mix the primary colors during this project, and improved my painting skills. I learned that when painting close details, you have to be very careful. Overall, I'm very proud of my final product.
For this sketchbook assignment, the prompt was social issues. Social Issues are issues that directly or indirectly affects many or all members of society. I chose to portray mental health, because it directly and indirectly affects me. I added stats on the left side page, about depression and anxiety. I also added poems that I interpreted to be about mental health. I added ghosts because it shows feeling empty or hollow inside, and just floating through the world. The hand is someone's hand who picks at their cuticles and hangnails because of their anxiety. On the right side, I drew a half finished drawing of someone's room. It's messy, and overwhelming. The walls are filled with posters that show what the person is missing out on, texts, and quotes. I learned about different mental health stats during this project, which was eye-opening. I also learned how to combine art and poetry into one project. I really enjoyed the process of making this project. I put a lot of time into making this sketchbook, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. It is one of my favorite sketchbook assignments that I created.

I really enjoyed taking this course this semester. I learned how to do many different techniques that I wasn't able to do before, like shading and using contour lines to give 3D objects shape. I also loved doing sketchbook assignments. It was fun to create art about a certain topic. Some of the prompts were challenging, and sometimes it was hard to meet the criteria for a sketchbook assignment, but this didn't make them any less fun. I also had fun painting with water colors and acrylic paint. I never really painted before, and this class helped me not only learn how to paint but improve my painting skills. Taking art has made me want to pick up drawing and painting again. Over this course, I realized that making art is hard, and it takes a lot of time and planning. Even the simplest of paintings/drawings takes time to make. I have a renewed appreciation for the art that museums or galleries that seems simple and not complex. My acrylic painting drawing, which isn't complex and pretty simple, took me days to make. Overall I really enjoyed this course, and would encourage other people to take it.
