A new era of Saint Joseph's tennis began in 2009 as the Hawks began play at the new SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The Tennis Complex added six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s tennis programs.
The longtime home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire '58 Campus added 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's previous 65-acre footprint. That expansion included the Tennis Complex, which now hosts a majority of the programs' home matches.
The construction of the SJU Tennis Complex brought with it the facility's signature event, the annual men's and women's Saint Joseph's Fall Invitationals. The inaugural events were held in September 2009, and the tournament has only grown in quality since, featuring members of the Hawk squads as well as student-athletes from programs up and down the East Coast.
"The SJU Tennis Complex provides our student-athletes with the ability to train every day on a top-class surface right in the middle of the Maguire Campus. With maximum court spacing, individual corner fencing, and great sight lines for our fans taking in the action, the Hawks have a true home court advantage." – Saint Joseph's Director of Tennis Ian Crookenden
Supplementing the Tennis Complex are the Finnesey Courts, the former home of Hawk tennis. Featuring four courts, the use of Finnesey Courts allows for a significant increase in the amount of competition space for dual meets and invitationals.
Adjacent to Sweeney Field, the Finnesey Courts had been home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to the construction of Mandeville Hall, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide an improved playing surface for the student-athletes.
During the winter months, the Hawks have played home matches indoors at various sports and tennis clubs in the region. Saint Joseph's currently hosts its home indoor matches at the Springton Indoor Tennis Club in Media, Pennsylvania.
