Monelison Trojan Newsletter 2021-2022

May 2022

Wow! We are already in May. We are celebrating all of our wonderful teachers and staff this week with Teacher Appreciation Week activities! We are putting on a BIG surprise appreciation week and we have a few ways we would love for parents to get involved:

1. We are trying to collect short, heartfelt notes for all our teachers, and we would like as many as possible. If you would like to create a short message of appreciation to a teacher, write it on an open card or note paper and use the example format below, starting with the teacher name followed by a comma. We are going to tape these to the lobby wall so the teachers may know and see how much everyone appreciates their efforts. You may sign it with your name or with Anonymous if you prefer.

EXAMPLE:

EXAMPLE: Mrs. Jones, I’ll never forget the special teachers who taught and inspired me when I was in school, and I can tell you without a doubt that you will be one of those special teachers to my child. She especially would talk about the creative ways you taught history. Your work will stay with her long after she has grown up. Thank you for all you do! – Casey Smith

2. During the week of May 2-6, our school administration is doing a Teacher Appreciation Week game show with prizes and treats each day (it’s a surprise, so don’t let it slip!). We have creative ideas and special privileges for many of the prizes, but we also need gift cards. If you would like to donate one or two, in any amount, please drop them off at the office by Thursday, May 5or email any e-gift cards to lgray@amherst.k12.va.us or kgarrison@amherst.k12.va.us. (These are cards we will use as prizes for the game.)

SOL Testing:

We will begin our SOL testing next week. Please be sure to look at our SOL testing calendar and tips below.

We continue to appreciate your support as we work together to make Monelison Middle School the best middle school for our students. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

This is a reminder of our current cell phone policy (this is not a new policy). This policy can be found in the MMS Student Code of Conduct:

CELLULAR PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES - While cell phones and electronic devices can be a source of convenience, they may also disrupt or undermine the educational process. It is the expectation that electronics are to remain off and in the students’ bookbag until they exit the building at the end of the school day. Students staying for after-school activities are permitted to use their cell phones after 3:00 pm at appropriate times as directed by the faculty/staff member who is in charge of their activity. All emergency calls must be handled through the main office.

The use of cell phones and any electronic device that can photograph or record is strictly forbidden at any time in private areas including locker rooms, restrooms, dressing areas, classrooms and offices. Such use may also be in violation of the criminal code. Students who refuse to give their cell phones to a staff member upon request may be suspended from school for failure to comply.

The following consequences have been established for students failing to follow the cell phone policy. The corrective actions below have been provided to assist administrators in selecting an appropriate combination of consequences; the list is not intended as a step-by-step process to be followed for each case.

1st offense – Warning

2nd offense – The student will be assigned one day of in-school suspension and the cell phone will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of 4th period.

3rd offense - The student will be assigned two days of in-school suspension and the cell phone will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of 4th period

4th offense –The student will be suspended from school requiring a conference with the parent/legal guardian before the student returns to school. The cell phone will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of 7th period

BUS CELL PHONE POLICY

Students must use earphones/earbuds when listening to music, videos, etc. while on the bus.

Earphones/earbuds are not to be worn when entering, exiting, or walking to and from the bus.

Students are not allowed to make phone calls, record images or sound, or take pictures.

Students are not allowed to view inappropriate materials; all content must be within the guidelines of the ACPS Acceptable Use Policy.

*The phrase “cell phone” refers to all communication devices that can send, receive, photograph, and record. Cellular phone use includes having the cell phone/smart watches, etc., turned on and/or ringing, text messages, and viewing/taking photographs. Final interpretation of the cell phone policy rests with the building principal.

** Students NEVER have permission to post the image, photo, or video of an ACPS student or employee on the internet.

Air Pods and other Bluetooth Listening Devices should not be used during school hours. Headphones that plug directly into the Chromebook are the only headphones that are approved to use during the school day. Teachers will review procedures for students regarding headphone usage during the class.

New Ticket System:

Monelison Middle School is excited to announce that we have a new ticket system for purchasing tickets to our extra curricular school events. Beginning for the 2021-22 school year, Monelison Middle School will begin implementing an Online & Mobile Payment Only ticketing policy at all athletic events. Fans will be able to purchase tickets online through GoFan, an online ticketing platform for Schools. Monelison Middle School will have a dedicated page on GoFan that can be found on the school website, as well as communicate how to buy tickets via email, social media, etc.

The new ticketing policy allows Monelison Middle School to operate a more efficient and professional ticket gate, while creating an enhanced fan experience. Purchasing tickets online, allows fans to easily access and share tickets (email or text) without standing in line.

A new ticket gate setup will also allow the school to easily handle capacity restrictions, as well as any potential event guidelines surrounding COVID.

Fans should purchase their tickets online prior to reaching the facility. Self-Checkout signage will be available on-site for walk-up customers.
