Literacy
Linking to our topic, we have been writing a narrative piece based on 'The Saga of Biorn' (a video about a Viking battling a giant). We learnt what features are used in a narrative and practiced these skills before applying them into our big write. The skills we explored are:
- Speech (using correct punctuation)
- Fronted adverbials to open our sentence in varied ways
- Expanded noun phrases to add detailed description
- Writing in the past tense
- Using similes / metaphors
LIRA
This half term, we finished our work on 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' and then moved on to 'Viking Voyages', a non-fiction to support our study of Viking life.
We explored how Viking's lived their everyday life, the different types of warriors Vikings could be and how they traveled the oceans and raided monasteries. We worked really hard on our reader response skills and tried to put ourselves in the shoes of a Viking to see how they would feel living at that time.
Topic
Our topic has really excited us this half term! We have been exploring 'Raiders and Invaders' where we looked at the struggle between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.
We explored...
- Placing events onto timelines
- What Anglo-Saxons and Vikings believed in
- Why Anglo-Saxons and Vikings came to Britain
- How Vikings crossed the North Sea and why/how they raided monasteries
- The accuracy of sources
- Who King Alfred was and the impact he had on Viking invasions
- How the Vikings were defeated
For our outcome, we created a Kahoot quiz to test Class 7 and Class 8 on their Viking knowledge. We tried to make it as difficult as possible! Have a go at our quiz by following the link or scanning the QR code below (you will need a free Kahoot account to access the quiz). What is your score?

RSHE
Our focus in RSHE has been 'Living in the Wider World'. We have looked into the difference between rules and laws and the consequences of not following these. We have also explored our local community, looking closely at different groups and democracy. Then, we went onto looking at positives and negatives of the internet and how information is shared and used online.
Things to Celebrate!
Attendance
Look at all of these children who had 97%+ attendance in the previous half term!
Walk to School Week
Mapplewell took part in Walk to School Week. We had lots of children gain their certificates for walking to/from school every single day. Well done!
Looking after animals
We were lucky to have an hour looking after chicks that were hatched in nursery. We all had a turn to hold them and we were all really gentle with them.
Looking after the environment
One of our children showed passion about caring for the environment. So much so that they made posters for classes to put up around school to remind everyone about the importance of recycling! What a great way to show our school values of respect and kindness!
Celebration Certificates
Here are just some of the magnificent children who have received celebration certificates this half term, you should all be really proud of yourselves! I wonder who will receive one next half term!
