The expansion of the Macomb Hospital Campus will be a state-of-the-art facility that brings a new era in patient-centered and technologically advanced care.
Pedestrian Oriented Site Planning
Site planning considers the experience of the patient from the furthest edge of the site to the patient bed. The site plan re-thinks the existing campus layout, creating a clear separation of vehicular circulation from parking zones and prioritizing pedestrian circulation paths. This approach is focusing purely on the safety and comfort of the building users over the number of parking spaces. The site plan is driven by the combining of safety with intuitive way finding and is meant to be a template for future site improvements.
Delivering Next-Generation Healthcare
A Three Step Approach To Improving Healthcare Environments. Using their evidence led three-dimensional process – Discover, Design and Do – Enviah collaborated with HFMH in the pre-planning stage. The approach was centered around a thorough investigation and understanding of the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital’s existing operational model and how the new building could transform their operations to achieve optimal outcomes. Results were quantified through system measures of efficiencies, including optimal staff productivity as they care for patients, staff engagement and workplace pride, and increased patient satisfaction through a defined experience of care.
Healing Environments
Community. The patient tower design embraces the community it serves and provides an unrivaled healing and patient care experience. Through a partnership developed with the Patient Advisory Group, valuable feedback was shared that led to the implementation of a design that supports patients and loved ones. Patients and their loved ones will experience private patient rooms with expansive day-lit views, private restrooms located near the bed for ease of access and safety, a wardrobe with personal lockable storage, and dedicated spaces for families and visitors – all in close proximity to their caregiver for peace of mind and to support recovery.
Innovation. The Henry Ford Macomb Hospital is known for their technologically advanced medical treatment and innovation. The innovation that occurs within the hospital is mirrored in the building design and operations. Computational design studies optimized the massing and orientation of the building, enhanced the building envelope and materials and supported the advanced engineering systems for this state of the art patient tower.
Exceptional Patient Experience
The exterior and interior architecture helps facilitate an exceptional patient experience by clearly defining the patient journey through the use of form, texture, materiality, and technology. The results are a hospitality-like experience with intuitive wayfinding cues, uplifting art, stress relieving color selections, and positive distractions for the senses with expansive views to nature and daylight.
The design will enable caregivers to provide optimal patient care, focusing on increased time at the patient bedside while addressing patient safety. The flexible and universal patient room model supports caregiver-to-caregiver collaboration, accommodates future advancements in healthcare delivery technology and improves operational efficiency with implementation of a future state workflow.
Supporting the Essential Worker
Now, more than ever, there has been an outpouring of attention focused on those who tirelessly contribute to the health and wellbeing of the patient community and the success of the health care organizations. In the new patient tower, innovative workspaces are created to support an agile workforce and provide choice in the workplace.
Planning efforts will affirm safety is addressed with syntax maps, and efficiency is measured in steps and improved workflow. Dedicated respite spaces assure that the health and wellbeing of the workers are integrated into plans, a directive from leadership.
