Social post threatens Stephens Middle School campus

Update at 0945: The individual in this incident has been identified and is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to the Stephens MS campus. A media release with information to follow later today.

Last night, May 30, 2023, the Salem Police Department received calls from concerned residents regarding a social media message which threatened the safety of the Stephens Middle School campus today, May 31.

Officers are working with Salem-Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) security personnel and staff to investigate the matter as all reports of this nature are taken seriously. School security and the Salem Police Department are taking extra safety precautions on the campus today.

A notification to the families, faculty, and staff at the school was made by SKPS. Stephens MS families should contact the school directly for additional campus information.

We also want to remind neighbors to the Stephens school campus, and any school campus, to always report suspicious activity in progress to 911.

We encourage students and families to learn about SafeOregon as a way to report threats of safety or potential acts of violence. The service provides several options for reporting tips, such as online, phone call, text, email, or mobile app.

Thank you.
