Class 10 Learning Journey Autumn 2 - 2021

Another fantastic half term had by all in Class 10! We have had a another busy half term full of exciting learning experiences. The attitudes to learning shown by all pupils has continued to be exceptional and we have produced some excellent pieces of work that we have all been proud of.

LIRA

In LIRA we have been exploring a number of different texts: non-fiction text called ‘The Story of the Titanic’ and a fiction text called ‘The Titanic Young Survivors’ which were both linked to our topic on The Titanic.

We have really enjoyed reading and sharing these texts to help us to develop our reading skills!

Literacy - Persuasive Writing

During this term in Literacy, we used the Titanic as our inspiration and created two amazing outcomes.

Our first piece we used skills such as subordinate clauses and modal verbs to create a persuasive advertisement encouraging people to buy a ticket the Titanic.

Take a look at some of our final outcomes!

Literacy - Diary Writing

Our second piece we created a diary entry in the view of a Titanic survivor. For this piece we used emotional language so our readers fully understood what emotion the survivors must have gone through.

We really impressed Mrs Hayes and Mr Garrood with our determination and resilience to write a fantastic piece of writing for our writing portfolio.

Take a look at some of our final outcomes!

Maths

In maths we started our learning off with division - focusing on using the long division method when dividing by a two digit number.

Then we moved onto to fractions where we learnt about equivalent fractions and simple conversions – between fractions decimals and percentages.

We have also looked at geometry and measures. We learnt about different types of angles and how to use a protractor to measure the size of angles using degrees. This was a little tricky at first but with lots of practice and resilience we mastered this skill! We also developed our knowledge of area and perimeter.

Finally, we looked at statistics and used ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ as a theme to apply our skills of collecting, presenting and analysing data.

Throughout this half term we have also applied our skills to a number of different real-life contexts and we have challenged the pupils to tackle problem solving and reasoning tasks.

Topic - The Titanic

This half term we have had a history focus; we have been learning about the Titanic.

First of all, we each received a letter inviting us to a Titanic voyage experience. The pupils were given a 1st, 2nd or 3rd class ticket. We spent an afternoon experiencing what it would have been like in the different classes!

We then learnt about primary and secondary sources of information, and worked as historians to decide whether or not they were reliable.

We also worked on our understanding of chronology to place important events, regarding the Titanic, on a timeline.

We enjoyed learning about the UK class in 1912 and how this impacted passengers’ experience on the Titanic.

We then used all of the knowledge and skills we have developed this half term to conduct our own interview with a survivor of the Titanic.

Science

In science this term with Mr.McDaid we looked at human and mammals. We had a exciting experience of being able to see a live dissection of a cow’s heart and lungs.

PSHE/RSE

We have continued to learn about healthy lifestyles. We have looked at the importance of exercise, impact of lack of sleep on our bodies, bacteria and viruses, the internet and balancing time online and managing emotional feelings.

RE

In RE we have focused upon special places and pilgrimages!

In our first lesson we learned about the significance of prayer beads

We learned about the Muslim pilgrimage to Mekkah. We put ourselves in the shoes of footballer Paul Pogba and wrote in the first person what we experienced

We learned about Buddhist symbols and why they are significant

Finally we learned about Hinduism pilgrimage. We put ourselves in the shoes of a Hindu and created a Facebook profile page dedicated to our faith.

Next half term we will focusing on Why are times special? Which will include religious festivals.

Celebrations

During this half of the term lots of children showed the school values and were awarded certificates!

Remembrance

We made 3D poppies to add to our whole school display to celebrate Armistice Day.

Fun in the Snow!

We were lucky enough to have some snow this half term. We enjoyed some time in the afternoon having fun in the snow with our friends!

Rudolph Run

We loved completing the Rudolph Run in school to help us to raise money for Barnsley Hospice. Thank you to everyone who brought in some sponsorship money and well done to everyone for taking part.

We hope you loved the Christmas Cards, tree baubles and calendars that were sent home - we enjoyed making them all for our families!

Next half term...

There will be loads more exciting things coming up next term! Here is a sneak peek of some of the things we will be doing!

In Literacy our focus will be on the book ‘Holes’, and we will be using it to create some amazing fictional pieces of writing!

In LIRA we will be using a variety of texts linked to our topic to help us to continue to develop and deepen our reading skills.

In maths we will be recapping on place value to build on our knowledge and skills from Autumn 1. Then consolidating our understanding of the methods used for all four operations before finally developing our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages.

During PSHE (including RSE) next term we will be looking at safety and the changing body which will look at; emotion/physical changes of puberty, menstruation, online safety, influences, overcoming potential dangers and first aid.
