Saturday, November 5, 2022

WOODBERRY FOREST, VA – The Fork Union Military Academy Junior Prep football team finished the season with a convincing 56-22 win at Woodberry Forest Saturday afternoon.

The win lifted the Blue Devils to a 2-3 record for the season.

The first half was a back and forth battle with turnovers and defensive stops. The Blue Devils managed to score three touchdowns by the efforts of Brandon Warner, Bryant Ray and Leland Edwards. It was a competitive first half against the Tigers, but Fork Union's defense stood strong hold a six point lead going into the half with a score of 20-14.

Fork Union didn't waste any time finding the end zone in the second half. Isac Toure recorded a long touchdown run that gave the Blue Devils the momentum needed to put the pressure on Woodberry Forest. The defense held the Tigers to only one touchdown in the second half.

Carmelo Spaulding was one of many defenders with a strong second half performance, contributing with a few tackles for a loss and a pick-six that got called back on an inverted whistle. Aaron McDaniels, Ronan Montes, Isaiah McDaniels, and Diego Serrano were amongst many who also performed well on defense.

The Blue Devil offense broke stride and scored 36 points in the second half. Warner, both McDaniel brothers, Toure, Alijah Patillo, Ray, and Edwards were main contributors to the productive offensive half.

Mark Shuman Named Washington Commanders High School Coach of the Week

Sunday, November 6, 2022

FORK UNION, VA -- Fork Union Military Academy's head prep football coach Mark Shuman has been named the Washington Commanders High School Coach of the Week, the organization announced last Thursday.

"I am very thankful for the Washington Commanders recognizing me as their Coach of the Week," said Shuman. "This is a great opportunity for not only me, but more importantly, the Prep Football program here at Fork Union Military Academy. Being able to secure a $1,000 donation for the program and the cadets on our team, is amazing. This recognition is mainly for the young men that pour their hard work into our football program and into our great Academy. Also, I am very thankful for my assistant coach Chip Chace in nominating me for this honor. Thank you, Washington Commanders, and Go FUMA!"

The High School Coach of the Week program is a league-wide initiative designed to recognize area high school football coaches who continuously demonstrate hard work and dedication to their football programs, the health and safety of their players, and who make a difference in their communities.

Shuman will receive a donation of $1,000 from the Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation to the Prep football program and was invited to Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings at FedEx Field. He is now eligible to be named the Washington Commanders Coach of the Year.

Shuman took members of his staff to watch Fork Union alumnus, Christian Darrisaw of the Minnesota Vikings, last Sunday.

This past Friday, Shuman coached his final game with the Prep football team in its season finale against Woodberry Forest School. Prior to kickoff, the Athletic Department honors its 20 seniors during pregam.

Fork Union Lands Two on the All-Virginia Prep League Football Team

FORK UNION, VA – Two Blue Devils from Fork Union Military Academy's Prep football team have earned All-Virginia Prep League honors, the League announced Tuesday.

Linebacker Isaac Rivera and wide receiver Emerson Smith were two of the 34 student-athletes to receive the award.

"I am extremely proud of not only our two All-Prep selections, but our entire team this year," said head coach Mark Shuman. "This was a tough year on our players and having a team that was 75-percent brand new to FUMA makes me extremely proud of the way we fought each game. Our team never quit in any contest this year and made my last season serving as Prep Head Coach extremely special. Thank you to our players for a great season, and a special congratulations to Isaac Rivera and Emerson Smith for their All-Prep League selections."

Rivera is a senior from Palmyra, Virginia. He is the son of Amber and George Rivera and played linebacker for the Blue Devils this season. Rivera led the team with 83 total tackles, 25 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown. This is his second-straight season earning all-prep honors at linebacker.

"Rivera continued his dominance on the defensive side of the ball for us this year," added Shuman. "This is Isaac's second year making the All-Prep League team, and I am grateful to have coached such a great young man. Isaac showed great leadership on and off the field this year and was always a positive teammate. I look forward to seeing Isaac competing on the basketball court this winter."

Smith is a junior from Stowe, Vermont. He is the son of Luke and Jennifer Smith and played wide receiver for the Blue Devils this season. Smith led the squad with 37 receptions for 627 yards and four touchdowns.

"Emerson Smith is a new cadet this year from Vermont," said Shuman. "He came to us from Georgetown Prep. This year, Emerson had a great season offensively at wide receiver registering 37 receptions for 627 yards and four touchdowns. He is a great competitor and attacked every practice to get better as a football player."
