Scheduling Guidance from Upperclassmen CJ Smith

As we have reached the half way mark of the 2021-22 school year, the time to schedule classes for the next school year has crept up on the students. For many students, scheduling is a very stressful time, and leads to the formation of many questions. Underclassmen, especially, are anxious as they begin the process of planning for what their future will look like at Kilbourne High School. Some upperclassmen, offer their guidance and answer some common questions.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

Molly Humphrey, a senior, advises, "Know yourself and what classes you like in the first place. I personally don't like history but I like to challenge myself so I did. Just really know what you personally love and follow that."

Junior, Will Haslett, shares, "Be aware of course load; know how much you can handle."

Evelyn Ambler, a junior, suggests, "Don't take too hard of classes that won't be good for you."

How did you plan your classes to prepare you for being an upperclassmen?

"I tried to challenge myself and took AP and IB classes to get credits junior year. Junior year you start to figure out what you want to do in college. I took AP bio and IB sports medicine and I decided I want to be a science teacher. Senior year I get to take more fun elective classes since I got a lot of my credits junior year." -Molly Humphrey

"Choose some of the classes you want to take senior year and look at the classes leading up to that." -Will Haslett

"I made sure to get enough AP classes junior year." -Evelyn Ambler

What do you think is the most valuable class that you have taken?

Econ because it is important for everyone to know how to handle money as a high school student, you don't really know how much there is to know about the subject until you take the class. I recommend taking the class closer to or during your senior year so you are prepared to start saving right out of high school. I also suggest taking the class through the school rather than online over the summer because the teachers are so fun and you learn so much. The notes and projects you complete are very useful." -Molly Humphrey

"I really enjoyed taking AP Physics and think it is very valuable." -Will Haslett

"I really appreciate the finance class." -Evelyn Ambler

What is one class that is offered that you have always wanted to try?

"AP Gov so we can debate with people. I got to build a house in civil engineering and architecture which was fun, so if you like that I think you should try it." -Will Haslett

"I tried a lot that I wanted to do but I love poly rad and highly suggest it. Or I wish I would have taken at least one more art credit." -Molly Humphrey

"I wish I did Journalism." -Evelyn Ambler

After receiving guidance from some of the upperclassmen, it becomes clear that a common piece of advice is to follow your passion when scheduling for your classes. If you are still questioning which classes to take, be sure to listen to your older peers as they have experience that can help you benefit in your decision making. Don't be afraid to try something new, and explore your passions.
