Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

principal's message

NAPLAN

Yesterday students across Australia in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 began their NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) tests. Except for Year 3 writing, all NAPLAN tests are on-line. The information from these assessments is used in conjunction with information from a range of school based assessment across areas of learning, to give us critical insight into student strengths and areas of development. For the past two years, our school has been trending upwards in relation to reading and numeracy results in NAPLAN, an indication that the work that we have been implementing across the school in Visible Learning, as well as explicit instruction in reading and numeracy, is having a positive effect on student outcomes. It is important that students in Years 3 and 5 arrive on time to school (prior to 9:20am) during the testing period, and that students have a nutritional breakfast, and lots of rest during this time.

Three-Way Interviews

Today you will receive information about how to book in for your Three-Way Interview with your child’s class teacher. These meetings are invaluable in facilitating an opportunity to discuss your child’s academic progress, and their learning and school goals for the year. Please be sure to book in, and come along in Week 10 of this term with your child to meet with their teacher.

P&C

Last night we held our Annual General Meeting for the P&C. Congratulations to our newly elected, and re-elected executive members. The P&C work closely with the school to benefit the students, staff and community. They volunteer their time and efforts to achieve successful outcomes for us, including raising much-needed funds to improve school facilities. I am very lucky to have such a dedicated group of passionate and caring individuals who go above and beyond for our students. A very big thank you to our current and past P&C members, who have contributed so much to our school community. I look forward to working closely with the P&C and many volunteers this year to continue to raise funds for our playground upgrade. Please consider volunteering to assist in any way, even if you don’t wish to attend P&C meetings.

Communication

A reminder that if you have any concerns regarding your child, you should raise it first and foremost with your child’s class teacher via the school office. You can call and leave a message, or email the office and request a response back. Your child’s teacher will call or organise a time to meet with you. Please be mindful that teachers are in class teaching or on playground duty during school hours so they will be in touch with you when they are able to.

class of the week - junbung 5/6p

Jingi Walla, welcome to Week 8 in the Junbung classroom.

Like Junbung (the platypus), we need clean water to survive. It is World Water Day next week so our motto is ‘throw rubbish in the bin, only rain goes down the drain’.

Rock & Water

In the Rock & Water program this week we were focusing on the impact of ‘Self-talk’, the inner words we say to ourselves. We focused on the difference between our ‘Inner Coach’ and ‘Inner Critic’. Our INNER COACH helps us use positive self-talk to gain the courage and strength to get through stressful situations. Our INNER CRITIC uses negative self-talk that gets us nowhere and only puts defeating thoughts in our head. So how do we talk to ourselves? The inner coach speaks kindly eg. “you can do it” “you haven’t got it yet but keep on trying” “you are always give everything your best shot”. In contrast the inner critic speaks meanly eg. “you’re no good” “you’ll never get this so just give up now” “you always mess everything up”

Writing

In writing this week we wrote about being BRAVE. We have included a few excerpts from our stories. The brief was to write a story about a character who does something brave. Students were encouraged to;

Think about:

  • characters and where they are
  • the complication or problem to be solved
  • how the story will end

Remember to:

  • plan your story before you start
  • choose your words carefully
  • write in sentences
  • pay attention to spelling, punctuation and paragraphs
  • check and edit your writing

~ Luka ~ It was a humid day at the skatepark for Eli he was shocked, frightened and terrified it was his first time being on his brand-new bike that he got for his 4th birthday. He gently hopped on his bike and slightly pushed off the ground but before he went down the cliff hanger ramp, he closed his eyes and daydreamed of falling off the bike. Suddenly he cleared his mind and said to himself ‘you can do it’ and then he bravely opened his eyes as he flew down the ramp. He felt a flow of joy rushing through his body.

~ Cleo ~ Climbing, I did it all day and all night, which is probably the least fitting job for me because I have always been absolutely petrified of heights and now I have to climb up in a scarily huge stone cavern. Hating this job was hard, especially because I had to do it every single minute of the day. The braided bamboo ladder swung as I put one foot after another. My arms felt like they were on fire and so did my mind. The narrow cave was closing in the more I climbed up. I tried my hardest not to look down to the floor that I probably couldn’t see by now, but it would still be as scary looking down into the charcoal void below me. I looked up to see the sticky nest that I had come all this way for. I reached my arm out as much as possible to grab the nest, agony brewing in my exhausted arms. hoping in my mind that this wouldn’t be my last breath, but I overreached and could feel myself falling, down, down, down.

~ Billy ~ Jeff sat on top of the apartment roof, imagining the stunt show he was going to see over the volcano in Hawaii. He was excited but scared, how could he get there? Hawaii was a long way away, on the other side of the world. Would he have enough energy to get there on time, would he have enough energy to even get there at all? He had never flown that far before. He was turning 38 years old and he had only ever flown from city to city, never country to county. He knew he had to try though because it had cost a lot of feathers for the ticket to the stunt show. He had to get ready for the big journey.

~ Thomas ~ “Come on let's start heading to the caves!” I yell as I head out the door. “Why?” asks Bob, my best friend. I’ve told him a thousand times that we must get the legendary shard of the Titan. I know he was scared that on the way we would come across ogres, demons, and all of the creatures you find in a fantasy. Finally, he agrees. Finally, we can start our quest to the Caves of the Titan.

~ Scout ~ Splash! Flicks of water shoot out of the ocean as people dive in and the boat rocks a little. We are here for Audrey’s birthday, she wanted to go scuba diving. She and mum dive in, splashing me a little. I’m really scared, I look down and my hands and legs are shaking. Dad tries to calm me down. “I’ll be with you the whole time,” he tells me in a comforting voice. He takes me to the edge of the boat, and I step back. Suddenly my lips turn blue. A thought pops into my mind, a shark charging at me, it opens its mouth and chomp. Mum swims to the edge of the boat, interrupting my thoughts, luckily.

~ Kipp ~ “Tyler! Tyler! Wake up they just called your event, and we didn’t come all this way for you to miss your comp. Get your board and go get in the water!” I start to paddle out the back so I could get the best waves. I saw a big wave, but I didn’t have time to duck dive. SMASH! The wave snapped my board in half. I didn’t know what to do. I called for help to a man on a jet ski. He had already seen me panicking.

~ Reggie ~ I can do it dad!” screamed Tom. “Okay, just be careful.” Tom marched off into the line. One person at a time the lifeguard was shouting every time someone would walk up the ladder. Tom was getting more and more scared then it was his turn. Ahhhhhhhh! Tom cried suddenly, a sharp pain filling his stomach. He ran back to his dad,.“What’s wrong son.”

~ Nikol ~ Szzzzzzzzzzz the butter on the pan sizzled. “No Chang Quo you can’t climb Mt. Everest, you’re too weak,” Hasou, Chang quo’s mother explained. “Your brother will though, look at his strength,” Chang Quo’s father added. Chang Quo ran into her room, sadness taking over her emotions. Her parents don’t ever believe in her. In Chang Quo’s room was a window looking out over Mt. Everest. Chang Quo’s family lived in Kathmandu and their job was to help others climb Everest, they were sherpas. Chang Quo had a dream of leading groups herself but she was a skinny little girl who can’t breathe in the cold. Sometimes she thinks the closest she’ll get to Mt. Everest is through her window.

Geography/Art

As part of our geography unit about Diversity Across Asia we have studied the 7 Wonders of the World. The students have done a fabulous job of representing some of the world’s most iconic wonders.

Wellbeing

To help can keep homework exciting students have been set a ‘Wellbeing Challenge’. Students are encouraged to think about their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. Students had to come up with an idea on how to improve theirs or someone else’s wellbeing. They had to put the idea into practise and present to the class not only their concept but how effective it was. Some of the ideas have been amazing.

Reggie – Everyday I am sending care packages with friendship bracelets, letters, art etc or chatting to my friend who lives in Byron Bay. Lately she’s been pretty down.

Reuben – I am making two coffees a week for mum. I taught myself from Youtube how to do latte art so she feels loved.

Nikol – I’m writing Positive Affirmations on rocks and affirmation notes and putting them around Bangalow in random places.

Annie – I have 4 focuses each week for my mum. Social Wellbeing – taking the dog for a walk with her, Mental Health – cooking meals for the family with her, Emotional Health – a swim in the ocean (mum says that always makes you feel better & Physical Health – gardening with her (did you know just touching dirt helps your wellbeing)

Elijah & Thomas – Random Act of Kindness everyday

Jake – Draw a different character each day from Dragonball Z for my dad. He doesn’t really love Drangonball Z but I do and he loves my pictures.

Scout – Each day I’m going to learn a new song on the guitar and draw or paint a picture. I love being artistic.

Frida – Mum had an operation recently so I am giving her massages, mostly shoulders and neck.

Iska – I’m helping mum cook because she cooks 3 times a day. I love cooking and I cab help her out and that makes me feel great!

Student of the Week

We are getting quite the collection of Student of the Week posters in our gallery now. It is such a fabulous was to celebrate a student each week for simply being themselves.

moving into year 7 in 2024

To enrol your child in Year 7 for 2024, you will need to complete an Expression of Interest for Year 6 to Year 7 transition. The Expression of Interest (EOI) lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7.

The EOI process is now available ONLINE. This link is also available on our school website (click on the Enrolment tab at the top of the homepage, then scroll down to select ‘Moving to High School’). After you submit an EOI and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a high school.

If your child will not be attending a NSW Government high school next year, please let us know by completing a Placement Not Required form (also available online).

If you are unsure whether they will be attending a NSW Government school (you’ve applied for a private school, or you are moving interstate), we ask that you still complete an EOI and follow up with your school once a decision has been made.

The online process will guide you through your options and collect the information required to make the process as smooth as possible.

For parents/carers who are not able to complete an application online, a paper EOI form can be collected from the school office.

For more information about moving to high school, visit Going to a public school.

Stewart House Donation Drive 2023

Every year, 1,600 disadvantaged children from NSW public schools experience a 12-day stay at Stewart House in Curl Curl (Sydney), where they participate in educational programs and excursions, as well as receiving dental, optical, hearing and medical screening and treatment. Stewart House (NSW Education’s charity of choice, supporting children for 92 years) relies on donations to provide this service.

Donation Drive envelopes have been sent home with each child. Your donation of $2 or more could win you a $4,000 holiday/gift voucher. Just enclose your donation in the envelope, fill in your details on the back and return it to school BY THE END OF TERM (so we can send them off in time for the prize draw).

Thanks in advance for your support of Stewart House!
