Grumio- petruchio's old servant who speaks his mind.

Biondello- Lucentio's servant, who does what he's suppose to do he's not as trustworthy as Lucentio's is.

Curtis- Vincentio's son, who disguises hihmself as a classics teacher called Cambio. Friends with Hortensio and likes Bianca and wants to marry her but by the end of the play he doesn't marry anyone.

Gremio- he's an old man who thinks he has a chance with Bianca. He gets punished later in the play, first he lost the the bidding war for Biancas hand. He then was tricked into paying Lucentio (who's disguised as a classics teacher called Cambio.) to "tutor" Bianca. Basically he's paying another guy to woo his girl he's after.

Cristopher Sly- one of the pricipal characters, who is a drunken tinker tricked by a mischevious nobleman into thinking that he's really a Lord.

Background of the play

The play starts where a trick is played on Christopher Sly by a noblemen. Christopher sly then decide to form an acting troupe to perform a play called The Taming of the Shrew. Bianca then wants to marry, but her dad will not let her marry until Katherina is betrothed. Bianca's suitors (guys who want to marry her) Hortensio and Gremio. Persuade fortune seeker Petruchio to court her. Who the suitors pay for any costs involved. Petruchio the marries Katherina, Biancas sister. Petruchio then decides to make Katherina not eat and sleep. This calms her down and she starts agreeing to her husband. The play was first performed between 1593 and 1594. The taming of the shrew was first printed in 1623. The setting of the play in on Padua Italy, and it is a comedy. The most important characters in the play are Katherina and Petruchio. His play doesn't include any historical events or figures. It A musical called Kiss me Kate is also based on the play.

Plot summary

The play arrives when the student Lucentio arrives in Padua, he then hears that the merchant Baptista has two daughters. But the younger and prettier daughter Bianca cannot be married before her sister Katherina. Lucentio falls in love Bianca. He then changes identity with his indentities with his servant Tranio. Bianca has two suitors but doesnt like them. Grump hires Lucentio disguised as a Latin tutor to woo Bianca while Hortensio disguises himself as a musician to get acces to her. Meanwhile Petruchio a young adventurer from Verona arrives to visit his friend Hortensio. He learns about Katherina me decides to woo her. Baptista is happy about petruchio's suit beacause Katherina is bothering him and is constantly quarrying with her sister and with him. Petruchio is not put off and still tries to woo woo Kate and fixes their wedding day. Kate waits for him at the church and Petruchio arrives in a ridiculous outfit and after the wedding he leaves from Verona. With his new wife. Kate then is forced to not eat or sleep by him. This is to calm her down and to listen to him. They the visit we father in Padua. On the journey they meet vincentio, Lucentio's father. They the have a strange conversation as Petruchio tests Kate's obedience all three of them reach reach Padua where Hortensio rejected Bianca has married a widow me Baptista has been tricked into believing a passing stranger is Tranio's rich father. While Vincentio tries to fix this problem. Returns from a secret wedding with Bianca. Baptista then hols a wedding for both of his daughters as this wedding Petruchio makes a competition to see who's wife is most obedient, Bianca and the widow fail to come to their husbands while called then Bianca tells them the duties of being a wife.
