TMBS News July 2022

Year 7 girls go from strength to strength

Our Year 7 superstars have continued to impress this academic year, claiming more silverware for the TMBS PE trophy cabinet thanks to their success in both football and futsal. After a fantastic start to the year, winning the county netball final at Loughborough University against Lutterworth High School, the football fixtures took over which saw our girls playing schools from across Leicestershire. Having seen all of the Year 7 girls participating in football as part of their PE lessons, Mr Humphreys & Mr McGuinness soon realised we had a special group on our hands. The pressure was on, after the success of the netball, to replicate this in the footballing arena!

The girls began their football/futsal season in early February with the Hinckley and Bosworth area Futsal, held at Hinckley Leisure Centre. After a slow start, drawing their first game, the girls soon got to grips with the tactics and how to play on the smaller pitch with less time on the ball. The girls won their remaining four fixtures and the final against Brookvale Groby thanks to some smart play in the middle of the pitch from Darcie. This HBSSPAN tournament win led to us entering the draw for the county football fixtures and the futsal county finals at Crown Hills Community College.

First up came the county football fixtures, which began with a comprehensive 8-0 win against John Ferneley College, this was quickly followed by a 5-0 victory against Brookvale Groby. Two great team victories with lots of students representing the school, set us up for an interesting semi-final against Brook Mead. The game against Brook Mead was a difficult fixture (not helped by injuries and some contentious tactical changes by the teachers); thankfully, the resilience of the girls saw us scrape over the line with a 4-3 win, phew! We then had a long wait before the county final against Lutterworth College at Harborough Town FC in May.

Plenty of good spirited chat in the week before the final between both teams, as a lot know each other from playing football for community teams and Leicester City academy. Lutterworth College came into the final in good form scoring 20+ goals in their three fixtures; we knew our defence and organisation had to be on form. A very tight opening with no real chances at both ends did nothing to settle the nerves of teachers and parents alike, although the girls soon started to get into their stride eventually winning the game 3-0 - with a superb finish by Darcie for the third goal to wrap it up for TMBS. Football County Champions 2022!

One week later we were back to work with the county finals futsal tournament at Crown Hills CC. Again, it took us a fixture to hit our straps and get used to the smaller arena, however the girls’ talent and determination to win shone through winning their three remaining group games comfortably. The semi-final meant a rematch against John Ferneley College who were much harder to break down on the smaller pitch, we edged it 1-0. The county final saw a repeat of our first fixture against Wreake Valley which we won 3-1. Futsal County Champions 2022!

There are many special performances and moments from the football/futsal season, what was most pleasing to see was the number of girls that have represented the school, several for the first time. We are lucky to have such a wonderful group of footballers. Finally, a special mention to the Year 7 parents who have followed the girls every step of the way and given such amazing support. The girls are fortunate to have such a supportive network, as are we as a PE department. Thank you for a great season, let’s go again next year.

TMBS Athletics

Summer term inevitably sees the return of the Athletics season. Prior to Covid-19 TMBS had an amazing record at Area and County levels. We were also reigning Westfield Athletics Champions for both the boys and the girls. Therefore the big question at the start of this term was, can we maintain these standards and bring home some silverware!

After covering a 6 week unit of work in lessons a leaderboard was created for both Key Stage 3 and 4 students. Using this data staff could easily select teams for the first major meet of the year. This took place at the Pingles Athletics track in Nuneaton on Friday 20th May 2022. TMBS selected a full squad of Under 13s, (Year 7) Junior (Years 8 and 9) and Intermediate (Year 10) girls and boys. We took a total of 68 students who were all an absolute credit to themselves and the school. Also, many thanks to all the staff that assisted on the day.

Anti-bullying Awareness Continues

Over the past few weeks students have been taking part in some Anti-Bullying activities as part of our Diana Award. We are working towards a well-being badge for school.

Students took part in a kindness kilometre every morning during tutor time and have been out on the field walking a kilometre to collect their peg.

All of our students have been designing inspirational messages and pictures to promote and tackle Anti-Bullying and encouraging people to “speak out”. Each tutor group voted for their favourite and transferred the winning designs onto pebbles. These fantastic pebbles will be placed around the community by our Anti-bullying Ambassadors over the coming weeks for you to find. If you are lucky enough to come across one of these positive pebbles, please email us at pebbles@tmbs.org.uk to let us know which pebble you have found and where you have relocated it. It would be wonderful to see how far our pebbles have travelled during the summer holidays and even better to see.

These peer mentors have worked alongside Year 7 students and most recently have led problem solving sessions in our local primary schools. Thank you to all the peer mentors for their hard work and commitment throughout the year.

National Numeracy Day - 18th May 2022

Numeracy is the ability to understand and work with numbers. It's using maths in everyday life. We asked some of the maths department to tell us where they used maths everyday (they weren’t allowed to say for their job). Here’s what Miss Clark had to say: https://twitter.com/TMBS_Maths/status/1526839502379134976

Year 7 took part in the Numeracy Day dance with National Numeracy Ambassador Katya Jones, here’s a little snippet: https://twitter.com/TMBS_Maths/status/1526894461229350916

Year 7 and 8 amazed us with their Number Heroes work on National Numeracy Day. They chose a job they would like to do in the future and told us how they would use numbers in that job. There were so many good posters, here are just a few of our favourites:
