VSEPR Model Ronald J. Gillespie of McMaster UNIVERSity
ABOUT RONALD J. GILLESPIE
ROBERT J. GILLESPIE IS A CHEMISTRY PROFFESOR AT MCMASTER UNIVERSITY. HE SPECIALIZES AND DOES EXTENSIVE WORK ON MOLECULAR GEOMETRY, WHICH INCLUDES VALENCE SHELL ELECTRON PAIR REPULSION (VSEPR) MODEL.
VSEPR MEANING
VSEPR THEORY STATES THAT EVERY ELECTRON PAIR (X) OR LONE PAIR (E) WILL REPEL ONE ANOTHER SO THEY ARE AS FAR APART AS POSSIBLE. HINT THE KEY WORD REPULSION. ALSO, FOR THIS THEORY, WE COUNT ELECTRON GROUPS AROUND THE CENTRE ATOM. THERE ARE 5 BASIC ELECTRON GROUPS ARRANGEMENTS FOR VSEPR. THESE GROUPS INCLUDE LINEAR, TRIGONAL PLANAR, TETRAHEDRAL, TRIGONAL BIPYRAMIDAL AND OCTAHEDRAL. THESE CAN ALSO BE CATAGORIZED IN GROUPS CALLED "THINGS". THERE IS "MORE ON 1,2,3,4,5, AND 6 THINGS" THAT HELP CLASSIFY VSEPR ARRANGEMENTS.
RONALD J. GILLESPIE VSEPR THEORY AND CREATION
RONALD J. GILLESPIE'S GOALS ARE TO UNDERSTAND AND ACCOUNT FOR EXCEPTIONS OF THE VSEPR MODEL. WITH HIS KNOWLEDGE IN CREATING VSEPR, HE HELPED US DETERMINE THE SHAPE OF THE MOLECULE. HE ALLOWED US TO ACCURATELY IMAGINGE WHAT THE VSEPR MODEL WOULD LOOK LIKE AND HELP US DRAW IT FOR LABRATORY OR CLASSROOM PROCEDURE. SUCH DISCOVERIES INCLUDE THE EXCEPTION OF WHEN NONBONDING ELECTRONS FAIL TO LOCALIZE INTO SPECIFIC ELECTRON DOMAINS. WITHOUT HIS CREATION OF VSEPR, WE WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT TO NAME OCTETS.
RELATION TO UNIT 2
RONALD J. GILLESPIE'S VSEPR CREATION PLAYED A BIG ROLE IN RELATION TO UNIT 2 IN 4U CHEMISTRY. HE PLAYED A BIG ROLE BECAUSE HE HELP US DETERMINE WHAT AN OCTET OF A MOLECULE WOULD BE NAMED. HE HELPED US VISUALIZE IF IT WOULD BE A POLAR OR NON-POLAR MOLECULE WHICH HELPED US COMPARE TO INTER AND INTRAMOLECULRE FORCES. HE GAVE US SPECIFIC VSEPR NOTATIONS THAT WE USED IN CLASS, THAT HELPED US VISUALIZE WHAT THE MOLECULE WOULD LOOK LIKE. EXAMPLE = AX4E2 WOULD BE A SQUARE PLANAR. WITHOUT HIS RULES, I COULDNT VISUALIZE IN MY HEAD WHAT THE MOLECULE WOULD LOOK LIKE AND THEN I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND THE LEWIS STRUCTURE AS WELL.
