Class 8 learning Journey Spring 1 2022/2023

LIRA

This half term our main texts have been linked to our topic which is all about plastic pollution. Throughout, we explored a range of vocabulary, answered a wide range of questions, identified the purpose of features of non-fiction texts and explored closely the use of language.

What a waste

Firstly, we Read What a Waste which is a book all about the issues the environment is currently facing.

Greta’s Story

Our second text of the half term was Greta’s Story, another non-fiction text which looks closely at the life of Greta Thunberg, what lead her to become passionate about the environment and all of her other achievements.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Our final book this half term was the Pied Piper of Hamelin. This fiction text allowed us to explore the legendary tale in more detail.

Literacy

Non-Chronological Report

Our first unit of writing was a non-chronological report on the importance of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’. We looked at using facts instead of opinions and we focussed on including a wide range of technical language in our reports too.

Persuasive Formal Letter

Our second piece of writing this half term was a persuasive formal letter to Mars Padfield asking her to provide the school with paper recycling bins. We explored using a formal tone and using rhetorical devices to make the reader consider our points.

Maths

In maths this half term, we have been recapping and extending our knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and geometry.

Topic

Our focus in topic this half term has been a Geography. We have explored plastic pollution and it’s affect on the world around us. We focussed our study on Hawaii where there is a beach which is heavily polluted by plastic.

We practiced many geographical skills such as:

  • Using atlases
  • using compass points for direction
  • identifying locations using four-figure grid references

Science

In Science this half term we have explored forces. We started off by exploring what a force is (pushes, pulls and twists) and how they can be applied differently and the effect that these forces have on movements.

PD/RSHE

  • Different relationships
