Vijayadashami is a composite of two words "Vijaya"(विजय) and "Dashami"(दशमी), which respectively mean "victory" and "tenth", connoting the festival on the tenth day celebrating the victory of good over evil.
The makers of the paper mache men "Ravana" are of impoverish conditions. We met a group of women by the street with blinding cataracts, and four children under-toe.
Ravanas are burnt with fireworks, symbolising the end of evil.
