Fork Union Military Academy Announces Selection of New Commandant as LTC Moss Announces His Retirement

Fork Union Military Academy today announced that LTC Roy A. "Tony" Moss, US Army (Ret.), will be retiring as Commandant of Cadets at the conclusion of this school year. Charlie E. Coulter III has been selected to serve as Fork Union Military Academy's next Commandant of Cadets.

LTC Moss joined the Fork Union Military Academy staff as Chief Financial Officer in 2018 and moved to the position of Commandant of Cadets in 2019. Prior to coming to Fork Union, Moss had served 21 years on active duty with the United States Army, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. LTC Moss is stepping down after five years with the Academy so that he might have more time with his family and provide care for a family member currently battling a serious illness.

"We are thankful to Tony for his service to our school and our cadets following his years of service to our nation," said Colonel David L. Coggins, the President of Fork Union Military Academy. "Our prayers go with him as he continues his life of service to others, committing his time and care to his family's needs in this moment. We have complete confidence moving forward with the proven leadership shown by Charlie Coulter, and we look forward the work he will do with our Corps of Cadets in the coming months."

Coulter served 20 years on active duty with the United States Marine Corps, retiring at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Throughout his active-duty military career, Coulter served in various units, including one combat deployment to Iraq and two combat deployments to Afghanistan. He was also deployed twice as part of the 22nd and 24th (Special Operations Capable - SOC) Marine Expeditionary Units. Coulter served as an Assistant Marine Officer Instructor at the University of Virginia's Naval ROTC unit, and as a Sergeant Instructor at Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia and served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Martial Arts Instructor at Parris Island, South Carolina. He joined the staff of Fork Union Military Academy in the summer of 2019, literally the day after he retired from the Marine Corps, as the Deputy Commandant. Most recently, Coulter has been serving the Academy as the Deputy Chief of Staff.

Coulter is a graduate of Ashford University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. He earned his Master of Education in Higher Education, Educational Leadership degree from Liberty University. His military education includes Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Advanced Course, Career Course, Sergeants Course, Marial Arts Instructor Course, and he is a graduate from Drill Instructor School.

"During his years at Fork Union Military Academy," said FUMA's President, Colonel David L. Coggins, "Charlie Coulter has served as Deputy Commandant alongside LTC Moss, and, most recently, he has been my Deputy Chief of Staff. His outstanding performance in these positions makes him uniquely qualified to step into the role of Commandant of Cadets with the institutional knowledge and practical experience needed to play a transformative role at this time in the life of our school."

Known to many on campus as "Gunny" in respect of his esteemed Marine Corps rank of Gunnery Sergeant, as Coulter assumes the position of Commandant of Cadets the Academy is promoting him to the honorific FUMA rank of Colonel.

COL Coulter and his wife, Rebecca, have three grown daughters, Cameron (24), Isabelle (20), and Zoe (18), as well as a one-year-old son, Charlie IV.

2023 Phonathon is Underway from February 27th through March 9th

Fork Union's annual Phonathon event kicked off on the evening of February 27 and continues through March 9, as a committed volunteer team of current cadets takes to the telephones each evening to contact Fork Union Military Academy's alumni, parents, and other benefactors seeking donations to support the Academy and its mission.

The 2022 Phonathon Team made 4,116 phone calls and received gifts from 569 donors totaling over $150,000, with most of the gifts going to support The Academy Fund.

The 2023 Phonathon team will work the phones during the evening hours from February 27th through March 9th with a goal of raising $125,000 in donations to The Academy Fund.

The first and greatest need of the Academy is to fund the school's operations each year: paying staff salaries and benefits, covering the costs of electricity and other utilities, gas and transportation costs, educational supplies and expenses, and financial aid. Tuition only provides part of the costs to operate the school, and only a small percentage of families are paying the full tuition amount to begin with. The rest of the money required to operate the school much come from donors. Each year, part of the Academy's annual budget must be provided by annual giving to The Academy Fund. To meet expenses, the Academy must raise $500,000 for The Academy Fund between July 1, 2022 and June 20, 2023. The annual Phonathon is one of the important fundraising activities that raises about 25% of the donations required for The Academy Fund each year.

There is no need for donors to wait for a phone call from a cadet to help support the 2023 Phonathon this year. Those wishing to make a gift may do so online at https://www.forkunion.com/phonathon.

Eight Band Members Recognized at the 45th Annual Military School Band Festival

FRONT ROYAL, VA – Eight members of the Fork Union Military Academy band were recognized at the 45th Annual Military School Band Festival hosted by Randolph Macon Academy this past weekend. Ten different military high schools and colleges participated in the event, auditioning against each other for two days, prior to ending the event with a collaborative performance.

Each student auditions for a judge and is scored on their ability to play pre-prepared music. Of the 15 Blue Devils that attended the festival, three received First Chair, three received Second Chair and two received Third Chair recognitions. These young men were scored against and on the same scale as the college freshmen that attended the festival from schools including Virginia Military Institute and New Mexico Military Institute.

“Every director was extremely impressed by the professionalism and musicianship of our cadets,” said Director of Music John Warren. “Words cannot describe how proud I am of how these young men did this weekend.”

Alessandro Gaudio, Joaquin Yescas and Ousmane Dieng were the three that earned First Chair recognition and received a Silver Medal for their performance.

Gaudio achieved First Chair alto saxophone. He is a postgraduate student who has contributed much to the music program since he arrived in the fall. The West Hartford, Conn., native plays in Fork Union’s Marching Band, Honors Band and the Saxophone Quartet.

“Having attended both performances at the Governor’s Mansion this winter and supporting multiple sporting events on and off campus as part of the Saxophone Quartet, cadet Gaudio has set the standard both in and out of the band room for what a cadet should strive for,” said Warren.

Yescas achieved First Chair mallet percussion. He is a sophomore from Miami, Fla.

“Yescas has been in the band room learning multiple instruments throughout his time here at Fork Union. While his primary instrument is the quints in the marching band, he put those aside and worked tirelessly to prepare to audition on mallet percussion at the festival. His flexibility and willingness to play any instrument asked has set him a step above the other band students and we are proud to have him in the band,” added Warren.

Dieng achieved First Chair percussionist. He is a senior from Germantown, Md., who scored the highest score in the auditions of any high school student.

“Dieng has tirelessly mentored our drumline here on campus to bring them to the amazing place they are right now,” said Warren. “At the festival, he did the same thing for the percussionists from the other schools to have them become an amazing percussion section in just two days. He organized parts and players for all the auxiliary percussion instrumentalists ensuring each knew how to play their part and their instrument. Dieng continues to raise the standard for every musician here on campus and for those that met him at the Military School Band Festival.”

In addition to the First Chair recipients, James Robinson, Peter Signorino and Christopher Chadwell earned Second Chair recognition.

Robinson achieved Second Chair clarinet. The senior from Falls Church, Va., plays in the Honors Band, Marching Band and is the founder of the Saxophone Quartet.

“Robinson has been one of our top musicians here in our band for the past two years. He has inspired multiple others to not only join the band but push their limits. Without him, the band would not be as successful as it is,” added Warren.

Signorino achieved Second Chair trumpet. The senior from Hayes, Va., shined at the festival, impressing COL Brody who is VMI’s Band Director.

“COL Brody, who directed the festival’s concert and auditioned the trumpets, raved about Signorino’s trumpet ability. He continues to put a lot of time in to expanding his ability as a trumpet player and has mentored all the brass in ways to improve. As the senior trumpet player in our band, he works with the underclassmen every day to ensure that after he graduates, our trumpet section is as strong as it can be.”

Chadwell achieved Second Chair baritone. The freshman from Seaford, Del., competed against students of all grade levels, including college freshmen.

“His preparation and drive to do well this weekend shined at the auditions,” said Warren. “As just a freshman, achieving Second Chair recognition just shows how talented he truly is. As he moves into his sophomore year, we are all excited to see where he can go musically.”

Rounding out the Academy’s awards are Kelvin Montesinos and Theo Aberra, who received Third Chair recognition.

Montesinos achieved Third Chair alto saxophone. The junior from Clermont, Fla., is in his second year with the band and has played in every event the band has played in over the past two years. He has been a member of the Marching Band, Honors Band and the Saxophone Quartet.

“Montesinos has been everything the Academy has needed the past two years,” said Warren. “As a junior, he has shown musicianship of someone who has played for many years, and we are all excited to see where music takes him in the future.”

Aberra achieved Third Chair tuba. The freshman from Charlottesville, Va., is in his second year at the Academy.

“Aberra performed amazingly well at his auditions and throughout the weekend,” said Warren. “To compete as the youngest musician and achieve third chair honors is an amazing feat. His musical talent was obvious throughout the weekend, and he has returned to the band room on campus with a new fire for learning music and striving to get first chair next year.”

Lastly, Matthew Moore competed in the drum major competition. Despite missing the podium by a hair, the senior from Alexandria, Va., performed extremely well.

“Finally, I would like to mention cadet Matthew Moore, who competed as our drum major and impressed everyone he encountered,” added Warren. “In his six years at the Academy, the senior has been a tremendous part of the band, leading and conducting practices both in and out of the band room. His leadership has been instrumental in how every other band member preformed this weekend. We are all extremely proud of his performance and I know that he will continue to improve the band as it’s leader until he graduates.”

Congratulations, gentlemen!

This Week's College Acceptances

It's that time of year again when our seniors get the exciting news of college acceptances!

Our goal each year is that 100% of our seniors gain college acceptance, and the Class of 2023 has already achieved that goal. Each year, our seniors work hard with the College Placement and Academic Services team under the leadership of the department's Director, Kelsey Hill, and the Assistant Director, Dr. James Benson.

Sophomore Sean Hurley Wins First Place at the Scale Modelers’ Old Dominion Open

RICHMOND, VA – Sophomore Sean Hurley of Fork Union Military Academy’s Scale Modelers’ Club won first place at the Richmond International Plastic Modelers Society’s Old Dominion Open this past weekend.

In the 13–17-year-old youth category with approximately 25 competitors, Hurley earned a gold medal for his KV-1 Russian battle tank in winter camouflage. Models were judged on neatness of the build, paint job, weathering and overall appearance of the model.

Hurley is the son of John and Erin Hurley of Palmyra, Virginia.

In addition to Hurley, cadets Kendall Coard and Niv Patel also competed for the Academy.

The Old Dominion Open is an annual model contest sponsored by the Richmond IPMS Club. The contest is attended by competitive modelers from all over the East Coast, ranging from South Carolina to New York. Competitors submit their models to a variety of judging categories based on age, skill level, type of model and complexity of build.

Richmond IPMS is a longtime supporter of the FUMA Scale Modelers’ Club, donating hobby kits, tools, paints and reference materials. FUMA’s club would not exist if it were not for their generosity.

Cadets Organized a Campus Prayer Walk Last Week

On Monday evening, members of FCA organized a prayer walk around campus.

Cadets Ronan Montes, Maddax Lee, Don Douglass, Leland Edwards, George Boitano, Minh Pu Dao and Dominic Lancey walked around campus to every athletic field starting with lacrosse and ending at the outdoor track, extending a prayer beyond their own concerns and focusing directly on the needs of the players and coaches.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 was the prayer walk scripture:

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

We are thankful for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes who are led by Admissions Counselor Major Gary Leydig.

Fork Union Announces Teacher of the Term for Term 3

Fork Union Military Academy congratulates ETN1(SS) John Warren and CPO/USN Jim Rooney for being named Co-Teacher of the Term for Term 3 of the 2022-2023 academic year. Cadets submit nominations for the Teacher of the Term at the conclusion of each grading term. The cadet nominations are reviewed and evaluated by the Teacher of the Term/Year Committee, which is comprised of non-academic staff members. After considering cadet nominations, the Committee announces the Teacher of the Term.

Term 3 marks the first term where there have been two teachers tied for the top votes.

Warren has been working at the Academy since 2020, starting as a TAC Officer in the Commandants Department. In August of 2021, the 2009 alumnus was named Band Director and now teaches exploratory music to seventh graders, seventh grade band, honors band and upper school band.

For Term 3, Warren taught upper school band, honors band and seventh grade band.

ETN1(SS) Warren received nominations that stated:

“Petty Officer Warren has by far been the best teacher inside the band room and outside the band room, by showing the true meaning of being a teacher who cares about their students and even those who are not. Since last year, Petty Officer Warren has been working on the band in which he started with only eight cadets and now this year the band has at least 50 cadets. The band has been to three different parades, winning one, and the honors band went to the governor's mansion twice. He works hard to expand the band more by recruiting new band members. Inside the band room, he works one on one with each cadet with music or anything they need help with, but also, he holds CQ twice a week if we have a B- or below in our One Subject Plan class. All these things show how devoted Petty Officer Warren is to make a difference at FUMA.”

“I nominate Petty Officer Warren as Teacher of the Term because of his unmatched care for his students. He stays extremely late into the night in order to make sure that the band is functioning and doing well. He works with each student individually and always cares for his students.”

“Petty Officer Warren cares and shows passion for his music and band students. He is someone we can rely on to help us for anything. Although, sometimes he annoys me, he sets the standard and disciplines me to help me become a better cadet. I can tell all he cares about is to make the school better and he starts with his band kids to set the example.”

Sharing the Teacher of the Term honor with Warren is CPO/USN Rooney.

CPO/USN Rooney is in his 16th year at the Academy. Rooney arrived in 2006 to teach in the Foreign Language Department. Outside of the classroom, Rooney has coached multple sports throughout his time at the Academy, including soccer and basketball.

For Term 3, Rooney taught German 3.

CPO/USN Rooney received nominations that stated:

“CPO/USN Rooney is a great teacher who has a great understanding of curriculum and willingness to help cadets with work. He engages with the class and has a mixture of "old school" teaching style with an approachable manor. He has never been nominated for Teacher of the Term and I believe he deserves recognition since he's has been part of the faculty for over 10 years.”

“CPO/USN Rooney always has a lot of energy. He helps me out a lot. He is funny but serious and is just overall a good teacher.”

Congratulations, ETN1(SS) Warren & CPO/USN Rooney!

Bravo Zulu Award Winners

Every Friday the Fork Union Military Faculty and Staff meet to nominate a few who have exceeded the standards and demonstrated superlative performance. Whilst we have various awards and recognitions - a simple "Well Done!" we hope, is also appreciated. The combination of the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags, i.e., Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance.

The following are the Bravo Zulu awards for this week:

Cadet Staff Sergeant Nicholas Coleman is a freshman and second-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from Woodbridge, VA. Cadet Coleman took the initiative to ask to lead chapel. He worked hard to present an uplifting and Christ-honoring message. In addition to his leadership responsibilities, he has tirelessly served as a Cadet Chaplain to invest in the spiritual growth of his fellow cadets. His initiative, service and excellent presentation are a testament to his faith and character. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Coleman!

Cadet Sergeant Sean Hurley is a sophomore and third-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a day student from Scottsville, VA. Cadet Hurley attended the Old Dominion Open Saturday with the Scale Modeler’s Club. It was a tough competition with over 25 modelers, and he won the Gold Medal for his Russian KV-1 tank. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Hurley!

Cadet Sergeant Alessandro Gaudio is a post-graduate and first-year cadet in HSC. He is a boarding student from West Hartford, CT. At the 45th Military School Band Festival, Cadet Gaudio achieved first chair alto saxophone. He has made a significant contribution to the music program since he arrived in the fall. He plays in our Marching Band, Honors Band, and the Saxophone Quartet. Having attended both performances at the Governor’s Mansion this winter and supporting multiple sporting events on and off campus as part of the saxophone quartet, Cadet Gaudio has set the standard both in and out of the band room. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Gaudio!

Cadet Second Lieutenant Joaquin Yescas is a sophomore and third-year cadet in HSC. He is a boarding student from Miami, FL. Cadet Yescas achieved first chair mallet percussion at the 45th Military School Band Festival. He has been in the band learning multiple instruments throughout his time as a cadet. While his primary instrument is the “quints” in the marching band, he put those aside and worked tirelessly to prepare to audition on mallet percussion at the festival. His flexibility and willingness to play any instrument has set him a step above the other band students. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Yescas!

Cadet First Lieutenant Ousmane Dieng is a senior and sixth-year cadet in HSC. He is a boarding student from Germantown, MD. During the 45th Military School Band Festival, Cadet Dieng achieved first chair percussionist. He has tirelessly mentored our drumline here on campus to ensure they perform with excellence. At the festival, he worked with percussionists from the other schools to have them become an amazing percussion section in just two days. He organized parts and players for all of the auxiliary percussion instrumentalists to ensure each knew how to play their part and their instrument. In addition to the large amount of mentoring and teaching he did, he also scored the highest on auditions of any high school student present. Cadet Dieng has raised the standard for every musician here on campus and for those that met him at the Military School Band Festival. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Dieng!

Cadet Major Ethan Schroyer is a junior and third-year cadet in Battalion Staff. He is a boarding student from North East, MD. Cadet Schroyer won an Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) Leadership Award (Crystal Award), certificate, and $1,000. He was recognized at the annual conference this week. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Schroyer!

MAJ David Wallace, Instructor, is recognized this week for his hard work and dedication to our cadets both inside and outside of the classroom. While teaching a full-time schedule, MAJ Wallace is also in the full swing of rifle season and has coached the rifle team to several victories in the last few weeks. In addition, he has taken our Scale Modeler’s Club members to events over the weekends, where our cadets have performed well under his guidance—including an individual first place finish by cadet Sean Hurley at last weekend’s Old Dominion Open. Bravo Zulu, MAJ Wallace!

Coach Samson Miller, Dive Coach, provided substitute faculty coverage in the classroom and social center throughout the last several weeks. He was also named the VISAA Diving Coach of the Year last week. Coach Miller’s dedication to the Academy and its cadets is greatly appreciated! Bravo Zulu, Coach Miller!

Special Bravo Zulu to CPT Christopher Morgan and Cadets Daley Adams, Charlie Bost, Leland Edwards, Jackson Edwards, and Charles Moore who made personal professions of faith Sunday and were baptized in front of the Corps of Cadets, family, and friends during chapel service. God Bless and Bravo Zulu, CPT Morgan and Cadets Adams, Bost, L. Edwards, J. Edwards, and Moore!
