Can we raise the Mary Rose? King henry is a bit cross…

First, we wondered what actually happened when the Mary Rose sank. There are a lot of possible Eaton’s which we looked at on Friday but we also wondered why only 30 of the crew, out of nearly 500, survived. We used three ‘photos’ to help us think through what it might have been like. After the first round of cannon were fired, the ship suddenly tilted over allowing water to rush in through the open gun ports. We wanted to show everything sliding across the floor before ending up all on one side. Cannons, cannonballs and everything else would have done the same. I imagine it wasn’t a sight to see on an empty stomach.
We looked at some of the ideas and evidence around why the ship sank. I slightly misjudged the amount of reading involved as about five different possibilities!
Sir Charles Brandon, tasked with raising the Mary Rose from the sea bed and getting her afloat again, was a bit worried that failure might result in a bad ending for him and he might end up a bit shorter than he was… about a head shorter in fact. He needed a plan to get the ship floating again, preferably before the French fleet came sailing back into the harbour. With nothing more than a lot of rope, two ships (called the Sampson and the Jesus of Lubeck), the location and lots of manpower, we tried to come up with a plan.

We did base our ideas on what appears to be historical fact. Sir Charles was in charge, ships were raised in this way at the time and we even know the names of the two ships that were used to help. The Jesus of Lubeck went on to be used in a far less positive way, but more of that later… We do know that this first attempt failed though!

We carried on with our portraits. We tried to copy portraits in the style of Julian Opie to help us see where the lines were. We used sharpie pens to draw on a plastic wallet with an image inside. We also tried the same with tracing paper which we might try again!
In Spanish, we were learning the names of some rainforest animals, in music we continued our pentatonic scale compositions and in science, we had a brief look at muscles - what they are used for plus a experiment based around exercise. It was so hot and humid, we curtailed the lesson to go outside to cool off!
In maths, we continued looking at time. There is no doubt we are still finding it tricky! It seems to be the idea of two timelines running side by side at different speeds, sometimes using the word past and sometimes the word to, to describe the time that is catching us out!
