Baylis Court School Newsletter 14 October 2022

Sixth Form Open Evening

A huge thank you to all students and staff who ran a very successful open evening this week. Mr Brown, Head of Sixth Form, said the evening was very well attended.

Aleeha Sayed, Year 11 Student, said:

I was very pleased to notice that every A Level subject was represented at Sixth Form Open Evening, I didn't realise that there were so many options available. I am now strongly considering staying at Baylis Court for Year 12 and 13.

Shamila Mahmood, Year 11 student, said:

Each subject had a station set up in the hall. It was very helpful that there were current Sixth Form students at every stall, because you get some real, unbaised, advice. My favourite part was the Common Room meetings with Sixth Form students, where you could find out about dailiy life of the Sixth Form.

According to a nationwide survey carried out by the Dyspraxia Foundation on almost 850 people, only 32% of children with dyspraxia or Developmental Coordination Disorder achieved the recommended amount of physical activity each week. These students generally have lower rates of physical activity due to difficulties with coordination, balance and spatial awareness. Depending on the severity of difficulties, students may struggle with all or some sports. Because it can take them longer to succeed or practice a physical skill, they are less likely to participate in team sports in fear of letting their team down, or because they are self-conscious and embarrassed that their weaknesses would be highlighted. The effects of this on physical and emotional wellbeing are very worrying which is why this year the Dyspraxia Foundation is focusing on physical activity.

The Dyspraxia Foundation website has a lot of useful information and resources for anyone interested in finding out more or if you would like to get involved in the campaign.

Artist Of The Week

This abstract kiwi drawing has been produced by Sasha Thomas In year 9. She has worked so hard trying to achieve tone in her work using a wide range of coloured pencil. Well done!

On Tuesday 11th October, some of our year 11 students represented Baylis Court School in a Netball Tournament.

The team showed great determination with some matches ending in a 12 – 0 defeat, with true Baylis resilience we then bounced back to take a 6 – 4 win in the following game.

Overall, the year 11s demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the duration of the tournament.

Competing in all 8 matches, Baylis Court positioned 6th.

Well done to all that were involved.

Thank you to all students from year 7 and 8 that have participated in Netball Club after school. All students have shown resilience, kindness and been inquisitive by improving their netball skills and knowledge. Keep up the hard work, Mrs Nelson.

I recently attended an in-person event at the British Airways Headquarters based at Heathrow, where I took part in a series of workshops to gain knowledge on what it's like working with a myriad of departments at BA, including Business and Engineering. As for myself, I have a zeal for Engineering and was intrigued to know more about the career. At the event, I was able to personally meet and talk to an aeronautical engineer who informed me of the apprenticeships they offer, the requirements, courses, and qualifications that I needed/would gain, and was able to inquire about any misconceptions or questions I had. The Engineer further mentioned the advantages of an apprenticeship, where you earn while you learn and get to travel to other countries! Toward the end of the event, we played bingo where we could try on uniforms and life jackets and speak to other young people who were in a similar position. I found it extremely helpful and am now strongly considering a career in aeronautical engineering.
