My Visual Art Studio by Marina Gurevich

My Story

Welcome to my art studio/ Portfolio!

My name is Marina or Rina for short. I recently graduated from Penn State University, completing an online degree in Digital Multimedia Design through World Campus. I was a back-to-school mom and began my educational journey in Fall 2018, initially pursuing a degree in psychology. I hoped that I could better understand myself and others by understanding human psychology. Ultimately, empathy was at the root of my educational goal.

Ironically, As I delved deeper into psychology, I started to analyze myself better and think more in-depth about my professional fulfillment in life. In one of the psychology courses, I learned about the flow state. The flow state is defined by high focus, joy, and energy. It's achieved when one gets immersed in a favorite activity that causes one to lose track of time. We truly can enjoy the process of what we do as a job by being in a flow state if we love it. I had an epiphany, and I asked myself: "Is psychology my true calling? Am I candid with myself about my future goals?" I felt that I owed that transparency to myself. I am a person that enjoys creative work, and my psychology major provided no outlet for it. On the other hand, creativity has always played a central role in my life, whether it is decorating, crafting, doodling, or creating digital designs. Yet, I've always done it without considering it to be a potential career path.

I felt I had an obligation to myself to start developing the skills in the area of my passion. I wanted to excel in art and visual communication and realize my true potential. As a result, I switched my major to Digital Multimedia Design in the middle of my educational journey, and I am grateful I did. I discovered that design is found everywhere, and we are constantly interacting with it. Design can affect our moods by frustrating or delighting us. Whereas a website with poor accessibility features frustrates users, an ergonomically designed coffee mug is a pleasure to hold. I realized that I could make a difference in people's lives, which required a different type of empathy. Empathy can come in different forms; in fact, it is the first step in the innovation process. It can materialize itself into user-friendly products and services. It's about improving people's lives.

If you'd like to know what knowledge and skills I've acquired through the Digital Multimedia Design program to become a designer, I have created a bulleted list of my most related course work.

The projects I present in this portfolio show my skills in Art, Graphic Design, UX/UI Design, Illustrations, Animations, 3D Modeling, and more. However, the essential skill in design is not necessarily the master of specific software but the ability to create something out of nothing. Therefore, I chose to present projects that show the most creativity. They are organized in the order of my educational journey. All interactive-digital projects presented in this portfolio are developed via the design thinking process:

ART ANALYSIS SKILLS

The process of gathering, storing, and organizing is human nature and essential to human survival. People’s material possessions were always associated with status, power, stability, and wealth. In the modern world, values have shifted, and although many people do collect things, most people believe that rare collections belong to the galleries. In our homes, we collect items for various reasons, often not being conscious of them. When we are children, our possessions are limited to toys, and as we get older and with time, our values continuously get reassessed, and we realize that some belongings no longer serve us a purpose. When the items are no longer valuable to us, we sell them, donate them, or discard them.

Not until after the industrial revolution did people start to pursue the idea of minimalism, which rejected the idea of hoarding things in our homes. I happen to be a minimalist myself. My extensive experience with moving and packing has taught me the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. I try to store things I need and discard or donate things I don’t need. I equally enjoy doing both, but the most excitement comes from the experience of finding a new use for an old item. Then once again, that item comes to life by being transformed into a new possession. The things that do score a chance to be refurbished are usually constructed of quality materials, whether it is paper, textile material, wood, or metal. High-quality items always ask for a second chance and an extension of their lifetime. That is why I have a closet full of art supplies. Together with the purchased supplies, I collect interesting used items that I might reuse by reinventing their purpose. I like to collect appealing tags from new clothes and packages and nice-looking containers that I hope to repurpose again. Inspired by the artwork of American Installation artist Mark Dion, I created a personal collection or box of curiosities by using some of those saved items.

ABOUT MARK DION

The artist that inspired my project is Mark Dion, a conceptual artist. I recently discovered that my art skills are not limited to drawing; I enjoy creating all types of conceptual art using various materials. I am drawn to conceptual art because it pushes me to think outside the box to solve problems.

Mark Dion is an American installation artist, born in 1961 in Bedford, Massachusetts. He is part of the Conceptual Art Movement that developed between the mid-1960s and mid-’70s. Conceptual art stresses the idea behind the art piece rather than aesthetics, expression, and skill. As a child, Mark Dion had a hobby collecting sea-shells, his hobby had later transformed into a passion, and he began to collect various items to assemble them into conceptual art projects. His ideas of organizing elements in his installations challenge the audience’s prior knowledge of the taxonomy of things.

THE ANALYSIS OF MARK DION'S ARTWORK

We ultimately have our own sense of organization, which is mainly seen around our homes. Sometimes, that organization can be an art in itself. However, what is unique about Mark Dion's installations is that the items are classified according to art concepts, such as form, shape, color, and texture, rather than their traditional taxonomy according to natural sciences and the origin of things. The artist uses various excavated objects to create a variety of colors, patterns, shapes, textures, and forms. There is a compositional unity in Dion's installations. The use of closets is a perfect way to organize the contents and create the negative space around the objects while emphasizing their form and color. His installations carry the duality of both representational and abstract art because they display simple objects in the most unusual way. All Dion's installations have a great sense of expression, maintaining attention to the variety, scale, symmetry, balance, and proportions. For example, in his artwork Cabinet of Marine Debris, created in 2014, the artist organizes the found objects according to their form and texture while also adhering to the balance of color when using the split-complementary hues of the twelve-color wheel. His techniques bring unity to the assemblage. The concept behind each of his installations is to carry a powerful message. For example, the Cabinet of Marine Debris, a collection of littered containers collected from the shores around the world, is an outcry to stop the pollution of our environment.

About My Work Process

Tic-Tac-Toe Box is my version of the Curiosity Cabinet, inspired by Mark Dion's artwork

When working on my art piece, I decided to borrow some of Dion’s ideas while trying to maintain my style as well. Whenever possible, I wanted to classify my collected items according to their form and texture. I used various packaging materials such as box inserts for shipping glass bottles, shoebox cover cut into the frame, small round glass vases, matches, bamboo sticks, a small round mirror, an aluminum container, aluminum wires, a fancy wooden bottle cap, a stainless steel scrubbing pad, cedar-wood mothballs, various strings, hangtags, a bead necklace, shopping bags, and gift wrap. Once I noticed the unique form of the packaging material in which I could compartmentalize my collection, I decided to modify the box to take the form of a tic-tac-toe game. To stress the intersecting lines that resemble the Xs, I used red gouache to paint along the edges of the surface. I used the white paper handles from the gift bags to form the Os encircling the edge surface of the round vases. To fill the space around the Xs, I utilized some of the collected items in a few compartments. Then, I used the red objects such as string, small scissors, and art pliers with red handles to create a dominance of red hue in each compartment while bringing the overall unity of color to the whole assemblage. I wanted to create a balance and variety in my composition. Therefore, I tried to deviate from following the same pattern of lines slightly. For example, I painted the lines thicker on the surface of one X and a broken line on the surface of another X. I used the hot glue gun to attach the contents to each box compartment.

Inspired by Japanese art, which emphasizes the presentations and small details, I added some features. For example, I attached the printed paper to the box's frame to cover the original shoe box label. I drew a koi fish using organic decorative shapes with a black fine-line marker on a couple of craft sticks. The project was a meticulous process and took patience, but I also felt inspired and involved. More importantly, it motivated me to analyze my organizational theory and style; whether it's an interior design project or a product design, small details can play a huge role.

Challenged to create a digital product based on the Digital vs. Analog theme, I invented and designed a board game called "Digital vs. Analog." The game is an educational product that helps players learn complex scientific principles such as analog and digital in a simple way. The game was designed in Adobe Illustrator and produced in print.

ANIMATION PROJECT

The first step of the animation project was to write a story and put it into a storyboard format.

UX/UI DEsIGN PROJECTS

PROJECT # 1

UX/UI Mobile App Design

This project is a prototype of an app called "My Impact," which was named to empower users to take ownership of their relationship with how their activities impact themselves and the world around them. The app was developed to help individuals to engage in a proactive lifestyle that develops habits that positively impact one's life. The application will assist users in setting a routine for activities that benefit themselves, family and friends, community/society, and the environment. The app's main home navigation is an interactive visual diagram of a fingerprint categorized into four color-coded activity categories that expand from micro to macro. This conceptual design's underlying purpose is to emphasize how the user connects with and impacts self (micro, the nucleus of the diagram) and then extends outward to family and friends, their community/society, to the environment (macro) through their activities.

The idea behind the app was born from empathizing with the users as a first step in the process of design. I felt there was a gap in the market for an app that would inspire people to be proactive in their world. I wanted to create an app that users could benefit from without feeling controlled or overwhelmed.

The app’s goal is to create a user experience that is inspiring, interactive, minimal, and satisfying at the same time. Instead of using a gamification system, which not all people might find valuable or inspiring, I decided to engage the user through the concept of the how their impact can affect themselves and their world around them. For this, I focused on the fingerprint diagram and extended its concept throughout the app.

The titles of each category from where the user journey begins – “Myself”, “My family and friends”, “My community”, “My environment”, help one establish personal ownership of their connections within these categories. The app is user centric and focuses on independence to choose and customize their activities and schedule reminders. Users have the option to invite one or more partners to participate in their activity, creating a sense of community and accountability in the app. There is also an option to document activities using an in-app journal where users can jot down or audio record their thoughts. Journal entries and activity logs can be shared with others.

PROJECT #3

UX/UI MOBILE APP DESIGN

The mobile application presented here is designed to provide a marketplace and a platform for mobile users from where they can connect users with professional and experienced coaches that can help them in various areas of life, whether it is times of crisis, loneliness, or need for advice or direction, or ongoing motivation in personal life. Furthermore, the app allows for flexibility (in payment options) and availability to use service from anywhere via phone app.

Based on a human-centered approach, the app is designed to find the right coach via interactive design through which the user can make choices. To use the services of the Coach App, the user needs to set up a profile or become a customer. The dashboard is the cornerstone of the app, the screen the regular user will be navigating from to access and modify services and their options. The user will need to sign up or set up an account to begin using the service. To achieve customer satisfaction in finding the best match, the user will need to specify the purpose of seeking help, i.e., what area in life they want to improve. The app’s “Meet Our Coaches” page helps one narrow down choices and find the best fit by displaying the qualifications and specialty of each coach.

One of the app’s main goals is to give the user more flexibility. Therefore, the user will have four payment options. The final menu consists of the most important step, a primary goal of the application, which is to find the best fitting coach based on the experience, specialty, and personal needs. I decided to use the card view menus on each mobile screen using clear-to-see labels. Furthermore, I illustrated icons to make the user experience more interactive and give an app a certain humanistic feel. In addition, I have designed a logo, the concept of which is meant to represent “help,” a metaphoric design that resembles two wheels of a coach. Finally, most of the choices are accompanied by illustrations or photos of people, which are meant to fit the theme of human connection.
