Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

principal's message

Remembrance Day

Last Friday, we commemorated Remembrance Day with a special ceremony for our students, marking the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914 – 1918). Students made poppies to wear, read poetry and spoke about why Remembrance Day is important to us. We also held one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Thank you to Ms. Morgan and staff for organising the ceremony and to the students who did a fantastic job leading the assembly.

Dance Showcase

Last Friday we also held a dance showcase, so that many of you who missed our performances at the North Coast Dance Festival had the opportunity to see our wonderful dancers in action. A very big thank you to Mrs. Cross and Mrs. Sharp for organising this, to our fabulous dancers, and to all of the parents and community members who came along to watch our talented students.

Building and Garden news

This week we have been given some of our green space back. This has been fantastic, as it has meant that we have been able to keep play time on school grounds. K-2 students are able to use the green space at lunch, and 3-6 students have access during recess time. This was perfect timing with the Bangalow Show this week meaning we wouldn’t have had access to the Showground. Students and staff are all loving being able to stay on school grounds, and are enjoying our reclaimed space.

Thank you to those parents who completed the survey about our new nature playground. The results were shared with the P&C executive and our landscape architect, and are being taken into account in our design process. We are so excited for completion.

Bangalow Show

Tomorrow after lunch, all of our students will be invited to go up to the Pavilion to see their entries in the show. They will then walk down Sideshow Alley, and perhaps even get to watch some show jumping in the arena or see some of the farmyard animals. We feel very lucky to be able to participate in this community event and thank the organisers for always including the students of Bangalow Public.

Coming Up

Before the end of the year, there is still so much to look forward to, including the Northern Rivers Film Festival, our Year 6 Podcast project, our Reflective Learner Disposition launch, our water safety program for Stage 2 and 3, Stage 2 overnight excursion, Presentation day, Year 6 Farewell and Clap Out, and of course our Friday Fun Day. I think students and staff will all require a break after that!

Have a wonderful week.

Carol

Ninga-nah – Stop, Look & Listen

Our kindergarteners had a wonderful experience with Delta in Week 4. We participated in a special Welcome to Country for our Jarjum mirr (children). We then had a guided walk along the stunning Byron Creek located within Bangalow Parklands. Our Jarjum mirr learnt about a variety of native plants and how they are important to Bundjalung people for food, medicine, tools and weapons. We learnt that the Bangalow Parklands is also home to a range of native wildlife, such as bing-in the river turtle, junbung the platypus, gehr the cockatoo and margil the water dragon.

I am from the Noongar tribe and it was really fun learning about the Aboriginal culture in Bangalow. It was fun doing the bushwalk and looking at the river was peaceful. ~ by Eddie

We went to the Bangalow Parklands with Aunty Delta to learn about Aboriginal culture. We got our faces painted with ochre and it felt really cold. We went on a walk around the Bangalow Bush Tucker Parklands and saw bees. ~ by Hazel and Reuben

We went over to see Aunty Delta and learn about all Aboriginal things. We saw lots and lots of weapons and we got to feel and touch them all. ~ by Kitty

Our class went to the Bangalow Parklands to go on an excursion with Aunty Delta. We got to touch animal skins and an emu egg. ~ by Emmy, Imogen and Anika

We learnt about Bundjalung people and how they used our local environment. Aunty Delta painted our faces with ochre, we could choose a dolphin, a snake or an eagle. It made our skin feel soft, some people thought it felt weird. Then we learnt a welcome dance and Bundjalung language while Aunty Delta shared some stories of when she was young.

After that we went for a walk down near the creek. We had to be very quiet because we were looking for turtles. There were lots of special plants, some that you could eat or chew on.

Then we looked at lots of special artefacts that had been used for different reasons. Some for hunting and some for keeping warm. We had an amazing time and learnt so much about respecting our local special places. It was fun to have a picnic lunch and play in the park at the end.

Sending an absence notification to school?

please don't just write "sick"!

When your child is absent from school, please advise us of the reason as soon as possible. You can do this with a simple phone call to the office, or by completing an Absentee Form in the School Stream app. If you are reporting the absence electronically, or responding to our automated SMS (which is sent out at 11am each day to parents of students who are absent without an explanation), please be sure to leave a detailed reason. If your child is unwell, please provide some further information so we don' t have to follow up with another phone call (e.g. "cold/flu", "headache", "tummy bug", etc).
