Global Climate Change Shianne DeSellier & Emma Hauschild

What would YOU say if one day someone walked up to you and said, "in a couple of years your house will be under water. Do you want to prevent that?"

What is global climate change?

Climate change is a long-term change in weather patterns such as, changes in temperature, wind, snow, and precipitation.

Before and after photos.

What are the causes of Climate Change?

Climate change is caused by many things including:

  • Human activities that involve burning fossil fuels (eg. coal, oil)
  • Emissions of greenhouse gases and other substances
  • (The build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is the primary cause for concern about climate change now)
Cars, Power plants, and landfills all contribute.
The Greenhouse Effect

What are the dangers?

One danger of global climate change is the melting of ice caps. The melting of ice caps is like a domino effect; it causes higher sea levels that in turn causes large amount of flooding. From this flooding many species will have to emigrate from their current habitat. Another danger is, warmer temperatures that can lead to health risks for elderly, the young, and some species of animals. And natural disasters will become stronger. ig: hurricanes. Growing seasons will lengthen.

The Evidence:

Satellites in orbit help scientists collect data on the climate of the planet and with the results of the data they collect they can see the climate is changing all over the world. They can also predict what the climate will be like in the future when they graph the data they collect over time. One organization that has scientist doing this type of research is NASA.

This is a satellite used to monitor weather data.

Cause of the problem:

  1. The primary cause is the build up of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere from human activities.
  2. An increase in solar radiance affects the temperature. (if it's an increase in will increase the overall temperature. If it's a decrease it will decrease the overall temperature.)

The Future Effects:

  • Temperatures will continue to rise.
  • Precipitation will increase depending on where you live.
  • More droughts will occur depending on where you are.
  • Storms will become stronger.
  • Sea-levels will rise.
  • Ice caps will continue to melt.
  • (All of these are current effects of global climate change but they will dramatically increase in the future.)

What has Already Been Done to prevent climate change?

Things that have been done to control Global Climate Change include:

On January, 21 a court of appeals in the district of Columbia has rejected to slow The Clean Power Plan that is the first federal rule limiting carbon emissions from power plants.

In 2015, leaders from many countries went to a meeting in Paris, France and agreed to try to reduced carbon pollution so that the world's average temperature does not rise two degrees Celsius which would have dangerous impacts on the world.

WHAT CAN YOU DO??

  • There are many ways you can help to stop climate change...
  • Car pool or don't use your cars for really short distances... Ride a bike, take a walk.
  • Turn off any electronics not being used.
  • Recycle.
  • Go energy efficient... Go solar, go green.
