Dear University community,

  • At last week’s Convocation, we celebrated the power of our faculty and our community.
  • The University’s Innovador Award recognizes an individual or organization making a lasting impact on education, particularly higher education, in Laredo and the South Texas region. It was awarded to Frank Staggs, longtime champion of education, students, and teachers and is the namesake of The Julieta and Frank Staggs Academy of International and STEM Studies, here on campus.

Faculty Awards presented are as follows:

  • Senator Judith Zaffirini Award for Scholarship and Leadership to Dr. Peter Haruna of the College of Arts & Sciences faculty, and director of the Masters of Public Administration program.
  • Receiving the University’s Instructional Technology Excellence Award was Dr. Cynthia Piña of the College of Education.
  • The Outstanding Teacher Award was presented to Dr. Lina De la Garza of the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business.
  • The Distinguished Scholar Award was received by Dr. Yong Chen of the Sanchez School of Business.
  • The Distinguished Teacher Award was presented to Dr. Marvin Bennett of the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering.

This week, we’ve got a full calendar of exciting opportunities to grow, gain insight and celebrate possibilities, this week at TAMIU.

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 11 you’ll have an opportunity to meet with the Laredo-born and raised, acclaimed author Katie Gutierrez of the best-selling debut novel “More Than You’ll Ever Know.” Katie will share a public reading, talk, and book-signing at the Academic Innovation Center from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Here’s more.
  • On Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom the IBC Keynote Speaker Series Lecture, “How Closing the Borders Heated up the U.S. Labor Market” will be presented. Our guest speaker is Dr. Pia Orrenius, a senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. It’s free and a reception begins at 5:30 p.m.
  • What does your future look like? TAMIU hosts its Fall 2022 Graduate School Open House, this Thursday, Oct. 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
  • Our observation of Hispanic Heritage Month is ongoing. Review our full schedule of events through Oct. 14 here. Find out more about our Celebration and Diversity & Inclusion on campus on our dedicated website.
  • We’ll bring that observation to a stunning end this weekend when we are joined by New York City-based Ballet Nepantla with their celebration of ancestral heritage and Día de Muertos Mística, at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theater. Scheduled performances are Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. The event is hosted through TAMIU’s College of Arts and Science showcasing. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations in support of the University’s Dance Scholarships are greatly appreciated.
  • Also on Saturday, from 6 – 9 p.m., the "undead" come alive during the first-ever 3K Zombie Run Saturday, Oct. 15, from 6 – 9 p.m. here. The Zombie Run is free and open to the community. Sign up here.
  • We continue to observe National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. We’re proud to be a part of this national observance focused on learning about the latest ways to protect the University, and our friends and families online. Find more information here.

Looking ahead to NEXT week:

  • It’s time for Maroon Madness. Set your calendars for the fun, scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Kinesiology and Convocation Building (KCB).
  • Student members of the Student Government Association Political Action Committee have organized two events to better get to know candidates for City Council and Mayoral races. A City Council Town Hall Event will be Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. A Mayoral Town Hall event will be Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m., also in the Student Center Ballroom.
  • As is our annual tradition, TAMIU will host the 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s here on campus on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022. Team TAMIU seeks additional members from the University community of students, faculty, administrators, staff, and alumni to join us in this worthy cause that impacts so many. Join Team TAMIU here.
  • Please note that COVID-19 continues to be a threat here, across our State, nation, and world. The use of recommended face coverings/masks, and rigorous hand-washing can help reduce your exposure risk. Learn more about on-campus testing.
  • Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. As the disease also remains a threat to college campuses, TAMIU students are encouraged to remain informed about the disease. Monkeypox Information specific to colleges and universities is available on our COVID-19 Response Center website.

TAMIU Names Recipients of Faculty and Community Awards at Fall '22 Convocation

Texas A&M International University’s Fall 2022 University Convocation recognized excelling faculty and community partners. TAMIU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Tom Mitchell presented the 2022 Awards to University faculty while TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz presented the Senator Judith Zaffirini Leadership Medal Award, the Innovador Award, and the University’s annual State of the University message.

Community Award

This year’s Innovador Award recipient is Frank Staggs, longtime champion of education, students and teachers. A retired educator, businessman, and rancher, he is most proud of his and late wife Julieta Farias Staggs “favorite place, ” The Julieta and Frank Staggs Academy of International and STEM Studies, an innovative, University-level high school located on the TAMIU campus.

TAMIU Presents Book Reading by Acclaimed Laredo-Born and Raised Author Katie Gutierrez this Tuesday

Laredo-born and raised author Katie Gutierrez will present a special reading and talk from her best-selling and highly acclaimed debut novel, "More Than You'll Ever Know," during her visit at Texas A&M International University Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. in the Academic Innovation Center, room 126.

The presentation, titled, "An Evening with the Author: Katie Gutierrez," is organized by the TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Humanities. The reading will be followed by a book signing. The event is free and open to the public.

TAMIU Campus Activities Board Celebrates National Coming Out Day Tuesday

TAMIU's Campus Activities Board will celebrate National Coming Out Day Tuesday, Oct. 11 with a chalk art activity from 11 a.m. - noon at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Memorial Garden sidewalk. Also, a flag and goody bag dispersal is happening from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Student Center Patio. The events are open to all enrolled University students.

Voter Registration Opportunities at TAMIU, Deadline to Register: Tuesday, Oct. 11

The final day for voter registration is Tuesday, Oct. 11. Voter registration tables will be set up at the Student Center Rotunda, the Breezeway and SOLE Offices (STC 224) to help you get registered to vote. Students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to visit a booth and get registered. The event is organized through TAMIU’s All-In Taskforce Committee.

Economist Discusses Border Closures, U.S. Labor Market for IBC Bank & Commerce Bank Keynote Speaker Series Wednesday

Immigrant labor and the U.S. economy are the topics of discussion during an upcoming TAMIU IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2022-2023 Keynote Speaker Series lecture Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The lecture is free and open to the public.

TAMIU Graduate School Hosts Open House Thursday

TAMIU will host its Fall 2022 Graduate School Open House, Thursday, Oct. 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center. Admission is free and open to the public. Prospective students will have a chance to meet with program advisors, faculty, and Graduate School representatives to learn more about the application process. Attendees can also enter their names for a chance to win a $2,000 scholarship.

TAMIU Hosts Free Zombie Run Saturday, Oct. 15

The "undead" come alive during the first-ever 3K Zombie Run Saturday, Oct. 15, from 6 – 9 p.m. at TAMIU. The Zombie Run is free and open to the community. Check-in for the event begins at 5 p.m. outside the Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreation Center.

Ballet Nepantla Returns to TAMIU for 'Mística' Performances this weekend, Oct. 15 - 16

A celebration and commemoration of ancestral heritage and Día de Muertos by New York City-based Ballet Nepantla will soon take the stage at TAMIU's Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theater. Scheduled performances are Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations in support of the University’s Dance Scholarships are greatly appreciated. Masks are recommended.

Maroon Madness Happening Tuesday, Oct. 18

Save the date! Meet our TAMIU Athletics Men’s and Women’s basketball teams and coaching staff during Maroon Madness Tuesday, Oct. 18. The event includes contests and prizes. Doors open at 8:15 p.m. but you'll want to join us for the pre-game festivities, starting at 6 p.m. on the front steps of the Kinesiology-Convocation Building. The event is free and open to the public.

TAMIU Athletics Update

TAMIU is a member of the Lone Star Conference and competes in 11 sports: volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, softball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's golf.
