Reading Newsletter Eagle PrimarY school - JUNE/JuLY 2021

Welcome to the Eagle Primary Reading Newsletter for June/July 2021.

Welcome back to the Reading Newsletter.

My preorder list is full to bursting and I am expecting a deluge of new books this summer, so keep your eyes on your local book shop for some new books to get you excited of the holiday!

For 2021, I have changed the categories as I was wondering if Class/Key Stages was a little restricting - anyway each book now has a recommended age - so you CAN be in Y5 and read the EYFS book - I know I do!!

So, into this month's recommendations... I hope you find something to enjoy!

Thank you for reading.

Age 4+ Book of the Month

Nen & the Lonely Fisherman (Ian Eagleton)

Far out to sea and deep below the whispering waves lives a merman called Nen.

Nen spends his days exploring his underwater kingdom, but something is missing: his heart is empty. So, Nen ventures to the forbidden world above and it is here that he meets Ernest, a lonely fisherman.

But can two people from different worlds be together and what will happen when a terrifying storm gathers?

A lyrical, beautiful celebration of love, acceptance and faith, with a gentle message about how we treat our oceans, and each other.

MR WATSON SAYS: You know when you read something that is just simply brilliant? This is one of those things. Nen has so many wonderful things gong for it - a alternative version of the Little Mermaid, Nen gets you considering love, difference, family pressures, loneliness, sadness, joy and acceptance. A perfect book for Pride Month.

Age 7+ Book of the Month

'Space Oddity' - Christopher Edge

Science and laughs combine in this out-of-this-world adventure, featuring illustrations by Ben Mantle!

'Pure joy' PIERS TORDAY

'[A] warm, funny alien read' VASHTI HARDY

'A bright, brainy book’ THE TIMES

'If you like your science with a dose of laughter, then this rollicking space adventure is for you.' WEEK JUNIOR

You might think that this story is going to be an intergalactic adventure filled with UFOs, black holes, killer robots and some very foul-smelling aliens. And you'd be right.

But it's mostly about a boy called Jake, his embarrassing dad, and the mind-boggling question ... are we really alone in the universe?

Funny, easy to read and hugely likeable, Space Oddity combines science, comedy and adventure for ages 7 and up.

A new, younger story from award-winning writer Christopher Edge, author of The Infinite Lives of Maisie Day.

Came out of The Big Idea Competition, from a story entry by scientist Dr Sarah Ryan.

Cover and inside illustrations by Ben Mantle (The Land of Roar and I, Cosmo).

MR WATSON SAYS: Another top read from Christopher Edge. An adventure in Sci-Fi that will have you worrying, laughing and even crying within a few pages of each other. Jake and his rather eccentric dad Ion never really see eye-to-eye, but then they go on a father/son camping adventure together to try to fix everything... well, that's enough plot summary! Proper good read in around 200 pages - perfect!

Age 9+ Book of the Month

Pages & Co Book 1 - Anna James

A magical adventure to delight the imagination.

A curl-up-on-the-sofa snuggle of a debut from a uniquely talented author. Eleven year-old Tilly has lived above her grandparents’ bookshop ever since her mother disappeared shortly after she was born. Like the rest of her family, Tilly loves nothing more than to escape into the pages of her favourite stories.

One day Tilly realises that classic children’s characters are appearing in the shop through the magic of ‘book wandering’ – crossing over from the page into real life.

With the help of Anne of Green Gables and Alice in Wonderland. Tilly is determined to solve the mystery of what happened to her mother all those years ago, so she bravely steps into the unknown, unsure of what adventure lies ahead and what dangers she may face.

MR WATSON SAYS: I really enjoyed this, even though it took me quite a while to pick it off my bookshelf. So much so that, I immediately picked up Book 2 after I finished! There is now a Book 3 and 4 in the series, and yes... I will be reading those soon too! It is a fantastic fantasy, rip-roaring adventure in which Tilly discovers her powers of book wandering - actually walking into a story and spending time with her favourite characters. It is full of twists and turns... double crossing and plotting... you won't believe what Tilly discovers about herself, her powers and her family!

Author of the Month

Lindsey Galvin

Books by Lindsey Galvin

Lindsay was lucky enough to be raised in a house of stories, music, and love of the sea. She left part of her heart underwater after living and working in Thailand where she spent hundreds of blissful hours scuba diving.

Forced now to surface for breath, she lives in sight of the chillier Sussex sea with her husband and two sons. When she is not writing, she can be found reading, swimming or practicing yoga. She has a degree in English Language and Literature, is fascinated by psychology and the natural world, and teaches Science.

Lindsay hadn't written creatively since childhood until the idea for her debut novel The Secret Deep splashed into her mind, and now she's hooked.

MR WATSON SAYS: Fantasy AND Natural History? Oh - that sounds fun! I was transported along with Syms Covington to the beautifully described Galápagos Islands. Lindsay’s descriptions help you to visualise all the wonders as seen through the eyes of Charles Darwin and his assistant. The added excitement of dragons makes it a story with a twist. I would recommend it for all confident readers and even want to read it to my young grandchildren. As an adult, I loved every page and was sad when it ended. An excellent read. It would also make a fantastic film! Even more interesting is that all the characters are REAL people, even if the events maybe aren't! Lindsey has created a brilliant tale for confident readers.

I think at the moment, finding quiet time to read is essential - now we are together in school sharing stories and texts, I think it might become a lost activity if it isn't delivered at home. Please remember that Reading is Reading - doesn't matter what you read, as long as you do some daily.

Remember as always, reading is a beautifully subjective thing... if you don't like a book, think about why before giving up.

Might it be worth another chapter?

Do you understand what is happening?

Use these thoughts to shape your future choices.
