Byron Bay High School’s 2023 Winter Arts Festival (WAF) is COMING!! The WAF Showcase will be held on Thursday 15 June (Week 8), from 4:00 pm. Parents, friends and the local community are invited to celebrate the incredible talent at our school. Drama news

Student work on 2 major drama productions is now underway, in preparation for the upcoming Winter Arts Festival.

Year 10 Drama perform 'A Friend Indeed'

Year 10 students are in the midst of devising, scripting and rehearsing their Wellbeing production for Year 5 and 6 students, titled 'A Friend Indeed'. The group-devised play is about healthy and unhealthy friendships. It has been inspired by wide-research, as well as stories, feelings and experiences shared by Year 6 and 7 students.

Our annual Year 10 Drama production for local primary schools has gained the interest of an ever-widening portion of our feeder school community, with 7 Primary schools attending over two shows in June. Parents, friends and the local community will also be able to see the full 45 minute show at the Winter Arts Festival showcase evening on Thursday 15 June, at either 4:10 pm or 5:00 pm in the PAC.

Year 11 Drama Production - 'Stories in the Dark'

This years’ Year 11 Drama production is Australian playwright Debra Oswald’s 'Stories in the Dark', and may be one of our most challenging projects to date. Set in an undisclosed war zone with two children as the protagonists, 16-year-old Anna and 12-year-old Tomas, who are struggling to survive and remain safe as they search for any remnants of their family and past life. As their forced and unlikely friendship develops, Anna tells frightened-of the-dark Tomas folk tales and fairy stories at night, and the play’s setting shifts between the worlds of reality and fantasy in true magical-realist style. It showcases the power of storytelling to provide hope, escape and comfort during a time of loss and survival.

Year 11 students are acting as both cast and crew for this production, taking on acting and technical support roles, whilst working tirelessly both in class and outside of school hours to bring the play to life. Under the direction of Ms Simone Museth and with the stage management and creative support of Pete Walker-Smith, 'Stories in the Dark' is gearing up for public performances in Week 9.

Tickets for Debra Oswald’s 'Stories in the Dark' will go on sale in mid Term 2 and the prices will be as follows:

$15 Adult

$10 Student

$40 Family of 4 (2 adults and 2 students)

NOTE: Please be advised, references to violence and loss in a war context are included in the play’s narrative, and therefore may not be suitable for sensitive younger children.

Byron Bay High School Band

Expressions of interest are now open for any students interested in an after-school band program. This is open to any students learning a musical instrument outside of school who wish to be a part of a school band. Please encourage your child to see Mr Black or Mr Baker in the CAPAL Staffroom to register their name.

Sport news

Cross Country Carnival - Thursday 4 May

We are looking forward to a great day on Thursday 4 May, with our regular course back in action. The format for the Cross Country this year is to help minimise the impact on our Senior students and to encourage all BBHS students to participate in this whole school event. The Cross Country Carnival is designed for students to run, jog or walk the 3, 4 or 6km course, along beautiful Tallow Beach. Afterwards we will celebrate their efforts with a BBQ lunch and cool drink.

Students wishing to compete for a place at Zone will be allocated the front row in their age group race, in order to give them the best chance of achieving their goal.

Period 1 and Recess will run as normal, with Period 2 being shortened to finish at 11.25 am. Teachers will then direct all students to the Oval. At the end of the Cross Country students will be entertained by their talented musical peers and a presentation will take place. Students will finish off the day with their regular timetabled Period 4 class.

Parents and family members are welcome to come and cheer on all of our students. Start and finish lines will be on the Oval.

Let's help Sonny get to the USA!

Sonny is off to the World Ninja Games in Orlando, Florida

BBHS Year 7 student Sonny Lingard has been given the opportunity of a lifetime - to compete at the World Ninja Championships in Orlando, Florida in July! Sonny is an aspiring Ninja Warrior and has been training really hard to get to this level. His passion and dedication to the sport are truly inspiring, and he has been offered the chance to showcase his skills on the global stage.

The cost of attending this event is quite significant, and his family need your help to make Sonny's dreams become a reality. If you can, they are asking for your support by sponsoring Sonny's trip to Orlando and helping to cover the expenses associated with competing at the World Championships. This includes airfares, accommodation, registration fees, and equipment costs.

By sponsoring Sonny's trip, we can help him achieve his dreams. He is a role model for all young people, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and pursue their own passions.

Any remaining funds will be put away and used for future competitions and to support his ventures in other countries.

Let's rally behind Sonny and show him that his community supports him!
