Greetings on the World Environment Day

Since the remote past, our culture is centred around the mother nature. The earth, sun, moon, fire, air & water are the renewable resources of energy supporting every life on our planet. Who else has been a well-wisher of us, human beings better than nature?

In contemporary times the whole atmosphere is polluted by smoke particles. It is the main cause of the depletion of the Ozone layer, which is increasing the temperature of the earth. It is one of the major environmental concern all over the world.

The Pandemic period of COVID-19, is a warning to all of us, not to tamper with nature. As long as we respect the environment by using it wisely we can be safe and hope to lead a healthy life. I would like to share a prominent statement made by Margaret Thatcher during the years of her Prime Ministership, “No generation has a freehold on this earth. All we have is a life tenancy — with a full repairing lease”.

Dear Students, it's our ethical obligation to heal our mother earth to lead a healthy and long life. let's take green initiatives and be the nature savior. It's your planet, your earth, you only can make it rich with greenery and a better place to live.

Do remember the words of Mr. Lester Brown, We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers; we have borrowed it from our children.”

"Happy World Environment Day"

UNITED NATIONS INITIATIVES

United Nations Environment Programme

A Movement that arose in the ’70s

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics: the first major conference on environmental issues, convened under the auspices of the United Nations, was held from June 5-16 in Stockholm (Sweden). Known as the Conference on the Human Environment, or the Stockholm Conference, its goal was to forge a basic common outlook on how to address the challenge of preserving and enhancing the human environment.

Also on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted another resolution (A/RES/2997 (XXVII) that led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the specialized agency on environmental issues.

World Environment Day?

The UN General Assembly had established World Environment Day (WED) in 1972 after discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment during the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. And it was after two years that the first WED was held with the theme ‘Only One Earth’. Celebrations were held annually from 1974 to mark the day, and then in 1987, it was decided the centre for the activities should be rotated so that different countries can host it.

Significance of World Environment Day:

The main idea behind marking June 5 as World Environment Day is so that we are aware of what is needed to be done to protect our environment. The day raises awareness about environmental issues like global warming, marine pollution, human over-population, protection of wildlife, and sustainable consumption. It has spread so far and wide, that WED has become a global platform for countries to reach out to the public.

Themes of Environment Day Celebrations in the decade

  • "Many Species. One Planet. One Future", was the theme of WED in 2010. Hosted by Rwanda.
  • "Forests—Nature At Your Service", was the theme of WED in 2011, Hosted by India
  • "Green Economy", was the theme of WED in 2012, Hosted by Brazil.
  • "Foot prints of food- Think, Eat, Save", was the theme of WED in 2013, Hosted by Mongolia.

  • “Seven Billion People. One Planet. Consume with Care”., was the theme of WED in 2015, hosted by Milan.
