In honor of School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on February 15th, we would like to say thank you to our MPS School Resource Officers! MHS - Officer Ryan Baxter; JMS - Officer Jose DeLeon; DHS - Officer Gunner Wright; NMS - Officer Andy Hawkins. We appreciate all that you do for MPS and for the Midland Community!

February is National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month! Did you know that Midland Public Schools offers many different CTE programs that prepare students for various high-demand, high-wage careers?

This week, we highlight the Welding Technology program at MHS!

Izaac Ringgold, Sophmore, MHS

The Welding Technology Program offers classes to work toward certification as a skilled welder - a job that is in high demand as they are needed in almost every industry.

MPS courses offered in Welding Tech:

  • Hobby/Art Welding
  • Welding Tech 1
  • Welding Tech 2 (Students may continue on to Welding Tech 3 at Delta College or can earn full AWS SENSE level 1 at Greater Michigan Construction Academy)

Featured Student: Izaac Ringgold, Sophomore, MHS

When asked how the welding program has made an impact on his education, Izaac responded:

"Welding has been a huge influence in my life ever since I started this year. Welding has taught me to have a work ethic, and it has given me opportunities that I may never get outside of welding. It has also taught me to be a creative and outside-of-the-box thinker as many projects require you to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Welding has made me understand that challenges can be overcome you just need to look at it a different way and ask for help."

Thanks Izaac and keep up the great work!

FIRST Robotics Competition 2023 Season for High School Teams!

2023 Team Members of Dow High’s The Charge and Midland High’s Like A Boss

The 2023 FIRST Robotics Competition Season for our Midland High and Dow High School teams is underway!

The Dow High team, FRC 2619 - The Charge and the Midland High Team, FRC 5509 - Like a Boss watched the 2023 game reveal on January 7. The challenge is called CHARGED UPSM and it is in alignment with the FIRST® ENERGIZE℠ theme for all FIRST programs, where teams will reimagine the future of sustainable energy and power their ideas forward. By encouraging FIRST participants to think about future energy sustainability, they are also being empowered to be the next generation of leaders and innovators, tackling the world’s toughest challenges.

Teams will have 9 weeks to design, build, and program a 125 pound robot where two competing robot alliances collect and process game pieces to bring energy to their community during the 2.5 minute matches. Teams bring energy by retrieving their game pieces from substations and scoring it into the Grid. Human players provide the game pieces to the robots from the Substations. In the final moments of each match, alliance robots race to dock or engage with their Charge Station to earn more points!

Save the Date: The 2023 FIRST Midland District Competition will be held at H. H. Dow High School on March 24-25! The event is free and the public is welcome!

On February 2nd, Chestnut Hill Elementary hosted its second "We All Belong" event. Ten different countries were represented by families and/or community members to provide information about their culture. Students were issued a "passport" and visited each display where they received a star in their passport. Once they completed their travels, they could enjoy from the different countries. The following day students who had completed their passport at the event were entered into a drawing and 3 winners were selected to receive a copy of the book "The Circles All Around Us". Thank you to all who participated to make this a great celebration!
On Thursday, February 9th, Woodcrest Elementary held their very first "We Belong" Night! Volunteers from our school and community put together different displays about their culture so families and students could become more socially aware of the various groups of people who make up Midland. Many families came to enjoy the event, and were also treated to performances by our 5th grade choir led by Rachel Jones and one of our volunteers representing China. Thank you to all the participants and attendees for a successful event!
