Women's Track & Field Opens HAARC in Dominant Fashion

The Women's Track and Field team welcomed Thomas College and UMaine-Farmington for the first-ever meet inside the Indoor Competition Center of the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center. Not only did the Mules win by a landslide (individuals won 11 of 14 events), but Colby swept eight podiums. Colby won the event with 146 points (UMF - 70, Thomas - 59).

Men's Track and Field Wins First Meet in HAARC, Morris Sets School Record

The Men's team also opened their season at home in the first meet in the Indoor Competition Center, and first meet in almost 21 months. Colby (118 points) topped UMF (103) and Thomas (94).

Tyler Morris '23

Out of the 15 events, Colby had event winners in the 400 Meter, 600 Meter, 3000 Meter, 5000 Meter, 4 x 400 Relay, and the Pole Vault. Junior Tyler Morris, fresh off his fall Cross Country season where he earned All-American with a 7th place finish at Nationals, showed his transition indoors was seamless, setting a new school record in the 5000 Meter Run (14:23:47).

The Mules swept the podium in the 3000 Meter and 5000 Meter Runs, and five Colby athletes posted results that hit the qualifying mark for the Division III New England Championships (February 25th at Middlebury).

Women's Ice Hockey Wins Spartan Invitational, Runs Record to 6-1

In 2015, Colby's Women's Ice Hockey team participated in the Spartan Invitational hosted by Castleton University. The Mules went 1-1, good for 3rd out of the four teams. This past weekend, Colby was intent on writing a new chapter and creating new program memories.

Facing SUNY Potsdam in the opener Friday night, Colby peppered the Bears' goalie from start to finish, cruising to a 4-0 victory, earning the chance to face the hosts in the tournament championship game. The Mules weren't content with four goals on Saturday, keeping the pedal down for a season-high six goals and a 6-0 win.

Nina Prunster '22

The ten goals on the weekend came from seven different scorers, led by Jillian Mazzocca with three. Bri Michaud-Nolan tallied five assists over the tournament, and goalie Nina Prunster turned away every single shot for her second and third shutouts of the season. She was named tournament MVP for her efforts.

Colby is now 6-1-0, good for second in the NESCAC, and has scored 24 goals in the first seven contests (highest tally since 08-09 when the Mules also scored 24 goals).

Men's Ice Hockey Powers Past Tufts 4-0

Heading to Medford, Mass. to face the Jumbos of Tufts University, the Mules were fresh off receiving the news of their third postponement (Saturday at Conn. College) of the season. Perhaps knowing the weekend contained one lone game sparked Colby, or perhaps the fire the Mules demonstrated in a thrilling victory over Bowdoin the weekend before was still lingering. Either way, Colby won their second NESCAC match of the year, this one to the tune of 4-0.

Jack Sullivan '24

Scoring two first period goals was enough to have the average onlooker notice the Mules were the better team. Deeper into the numbers, however, one would find that Colby held Tufts to three shots in the first period, then six in the second, and finally four in the third, for a grand total of 13 in the entire game.

Goalkeeper Andy Beran turned away every shot that came his way, and defenseman Jack Sullivan assisted on the first two goals and led the stiff defensive unit to Colby's first shutout of the season.

The Mules are now 3-2-0, good for fourth in the NESCAC. Their 18 goals scored across the first five games is the most the team has seen since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, a season that ended in the NCAA Final Four.

Women's Basketball 2-0 on the Week, Improves to 8-1

Colby played two games in the final week of the first semester, registering commanding victories over Plymouth State (68-48) and cross-town rival Thomas College (58-45).

In the first game, three Colby players scored in double digits, led by Keagan Dunbar and Caroline Smith, each with 14. Carly Christofori was right behind with 13, and Chiamaka Ubani barely missed a double-double with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Keagan Dunbar '22

Facing Thomas College, Dunbar (14) and Christofori (11) led Colby scorers, and guided the Mules to the best record to open a season since the 2014-15 team opened with a matching 8-1.

Men's Basketball Takes UMF to OT, Splits the Week

Facing a hot UMaine Farmington team on Wednesday, the Mules played spirited and aggressive defense to hold the high-scoring Beavers within reach. Averaging 99 points a game in regulation this season, the Beavers found points harder to come by against Colby, registering only 72 in the first 40 minutes.

Will King '23

Knotted at 72 heading to extra time, NESCAC assist leader Will King took control. The assist specialist-turned-scorer connected on two three pointers and three free throws to guide Colby to the 86-81 win.

In the final game of the semester on the road at Brandeis, Colby went neck and neck the entire way with the Judges. Despite 17 points from King, 10 points from Noah Tyson, and 15 more points from sophomore David Basich off the bench, no lead was safe. Brandies was able to hit a three pointer with 30 seconds remaining to tie, and sink the deciding free throw with four seconds on the clock to secure the win.

Colby ends the semester 6-4 looking ahead to NESCAC play in January.

NESCAS Releases All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship Teams
