The Omaha baseball team opened with a 5-2 win Wednesday at K-State, led by Parker Smejkal's 2-for-4 night with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Eric Moreno (1-0) earned his first win of the year, tossing 2.0 shutout innings with no hits while striking out two. James Smith picked up his first save, limiting KSU to one hit in the ninth with a strikeout.
On Friday, Omaha dropped its conference opener to South Dakota State, 5-2. Grant Suponchick was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Smejkal was 2-for-4 and Marcus Ethen went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
On Saturday, SDSU shut out the Mavericks, 15-0. Ethen, Sam Palensky, Cole Patterson and Cole Thibodeau each had a hit for the day.
The weekend series came to a close on Sunday, when the Jackrabbits rallied past an early 3-0 Maverick lead to take a 13-4 decision. Jack Kalina (2-for-2, one run) and Andrew Hall (2-for-2, one RBI) each had multi-hit performances off the bench.
Omaha softball went 1-4 at the Rock Chalk Challenge last weekend. UNO opened the tournament Friday with a 7-0 loss to No. 12 LSU. Lia Mancuso went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double to lead the Mavericks, while Emma Dargy finished 1-for-3.
UNO came back from a 5-1 deficit in Saturday's first game to defeat Southeast Missouri State 6-5. Nicole Warren finished 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs scored. Kelly Pattison went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run, while Dargy drove in three runs with a 1-for-3 effort at the plate. Abbie Clanton (4-8) picked up the win, holding SEMO to one run on two hits and three walks while striking out a batter over 3.0 innings.
The Mavericks fell to UMKC in Saturday's second game, 7-5. Warren finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Lizzie Noble went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, and Pattison added a 1-for-3 effort with an RBI.
Omaha fell to Tulsa Sunday morning, 7-2. Mancuso went 2-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base. Vicky Kinney had a 1-for-2 effort with a home run and two RBI, and Pattison had a base hit and scored a run.
The Mavericks wrapped up play with a 12-4 loss in six innings to Kansas. Pattison led Omaha at the plate in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Hunt and Emily Klosterman each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Omaha men's golf team finished 15th at the GCU Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon last weekend. Mitch Ryan led the Mavericks with a 54-hole score of 219 to put him in a tie for 42nd in the 98-player field. Ben Maskus finished second with a total of 223, good for a tie for 63rd.
The Omaha women's golf team was sixth at the Bama Beach Bash last weekend in Gulf Shores, Ala. Megan Vetrovsky led the Mavericks for the sixth time in seven tournaments this season with a score of 223. She finished seventh in the field of 51 golfers. Jordan York was second for the Mavericks with a score of 237, good for a tie for 28th.
The Omaha men's tennis team dropped a doubleheader to Arkansas last Saturday by identical 5-0 scores. In the opener, Razvan Grigorescu, the No. 57 player in the country, lost a split set match to No. 24 Jose Salazar. Grigorescu won the first set 6-4, but lost the second 7-5 and then fell in the third set super-tiebreaker 1-0 (10-5).
In the second match, Luke Moorhead dropped a hard-fought match at No. 6 singles to Austin Robles. Moorhead won the first set 6-2 but fell 6-1 and 6-0 in the final two sets.
The Omaha track & field team opened the outdoor season at the Tulsa Duels last weekend. Stephanie Ahrens won the high jump with a mark of 5-07. The Mavericks got five personal bests in the 400 meters led by Lauren Houston (57.53) who finished third and Alyssa Thavenet (58.47) who took fourth. Renata Valquier-Chavez was UNO's top finisher in both the 1,500 meters (5th/4:51.35) and the 3,000 meters (5th/10:54.60).
