Cadets Travel to the Air & Space Museum

The Robotics and STEM clubs recently cosponsored a trip to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia. The cadets enjoyed seeing a variety of vehicles on display including the Discovery Space Shuttle, an SR-71, a Concord, and many other historical aircraft. After touring the museum, the cadets enjoyed a stop for ice cream at the Moo Thru on the way back to campus.

Meet the Social Studies Department Chair

Let's get to know CPT Black!

What brought you to Fork Union Military Academy?

A desire to make a difference in young mens’ lives.

What made you become a teacher?

Nothing – I desired to become a teacher to have to opportunity to teach young men and present a positive example for them.

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

Being able to interact with the cadets in class.

What makes Fork Union special to you?

Witnessing the growth of individual cadets throughout the school year.

What classes will you teach this year?

US Military History; Leadership & Ethics; US Government.

What other responsibilities do you have a FUMA besides teaching?

I coach football and lacrosse.

What is one thing the cadets would be surprised to learn about you?

I completed (graduated) TOPGUN in February 1992 as part of class 92-02.

Fork Union Participates in the See You At The Pole Annual Event

See You At The Pole is said to have started with a small youth group in Burleson, Texas, back in 1990 and it has grown into a worldwide movement in which students at schools around the globe gather for prayer on the fourth Wednesday of September. At Fork Union Military Academy, the event is led by members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and participation is open to all cadets, staff, and faculty of the Academy.

This annual prayer event is notable at the Academy for another reason as well: it is perhaps the only time that cadets are permitted to be on the grass of Fraley Circle.

Does your cadet want to go to Italy?

This Week's Bravo Zulu Awards

Every Friday the Fork Union Military Faculty and Staff meet to nominate a few who have exceeded the standards and demonstrated superlative performance. Whilst we have various awards and recognitions - a simple "Well Done!" we hope, is also appreciated. The combination of the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags, i.e., Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance.

The following are the Bravo Zulu awards for this week:

Cadet Sergeant Jeremiah Baston is a senior and third-year cadet in Alpha Company. He is a boarding student from Norfolk, VA. Cadet Baston recently presented a plan to make the laundry process more efficient. He increased the number of carts by one, reducing an overload and providing laundry service faster and more efficiently within his team. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Baston!

Cadet Sergeant Dalton Davis is a senior and third-year cadet in Bravo Company. He is a boarding student from Leland, NC. Cadet Davis stayed after every mess hall period to clean every table, bar and floors. When asked why he took it upon himself to do it, he replied, “it needed to be done!” He embodied the FUMA values of character and respect through these acts of service. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Davis!

Cadet Private Ronan Montes is an eighth grader and first-year in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from San Antonio, TX. Cadet Montes observed a fellow cadet looking downtrodden after morning formation. While most would have kept walking, Cadet Montes spent time talking with his fellow cadet and personally escorted him to the school counselor. His service to his brother embodied the love of God. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Montes.

Cadet Sergeant Colton Childers is a ninth grader and second-year cadet in HSC. He is a boarding student from Isle of Palms, SC. Cadet Childers recently earned the position of Assistant Squad Leader. He increased morale and overall room standards by coordinating a friendly competition within his floor for ‘best kept room’ and personally provided tangible rewards to the winner. He plans for more competitions and to expand these to the entire company. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Childers!

Go FUMA!
