Somali Piracy

One of the biggest problems in Somalia is piracy, one of the main reasons for the abundance of piracy is the collapse of the government in 1991.
One of the main "income" sources for Somali pirates is holding people captive for a very high ransom. In many cases the fine is too high for the family or friend to pay without going into debt. Hostages may be held for 1 month to a year, some hostages return with sickness and some may never get on a boat again(for obvious reasons).
A lot of people assume that prisoners are held on boats or in coves, but mostly they are held in small run down towns in the middle of nowhere. These towns are not exactly sanitary, and the hostages aren't usually fed delicacies so many prisoners return looking like this guy.
Pirate boats look like regular fishing boats until the "fishermen" pull out M16s. The countries that have signed contracts with Somalia can't search every single boat in African ocean area, so most pirates go undetected. Britain and the U.S. Have signed agreements with Kenya and Somalia to take any pirates they catch to court. One of the problems with this strategy is that the government in both countries is sadly lacking, thus many pirates can wheedle their way out of serving time.
Don't pirates fight each other? Sometimes but most pirates are in gangs, so if they ever fight each other it's between gangs. Gangs are usually made up of several boats full of scary nutsoes with guns, the amount of boats helps to chase fishing or merchant ships down and encircle them.
Many Somali pirates became pirates because they were angry at the foreign fishing boats overfishing their waters and dumping toxic waste into the ocean. Since Somalias government collapsed in 1991 jobs became harder to get since much of Somalias economy resides in the area of fishing, most people turned to piracy.
A father is a pirate he is captured by a foreign navy and sentenced to years in prison. His wife is left with a family to feed and most children are to young to get a job. The family goes into poverty, when the eldest son is old enough to work his family is deep in debt and piracy seems like the only way out. That son gets marrieds, then he gets captured by a navy, he leaves his family in poverty.
The cycle continues without apposition. Nothing is working. Children starve because their fathers are in prison.
