Breakout Sessions

The goal of these break out sessions were to create Real-world solutions for averting a global food crisis. Four topics were discussed in groups:
  • Applied Science and Technology Solutions
  • More Effective Food Distribution (Not Discussed)
  • Restructuring the farming of the future
  • Policy and regulation to promote environmental, economical and social sustainability

Restructuring Future Farming

This workshop focused on deriving action plans to restructure future farming.

They came up with five different action plans:

  • Promotion of local farming including urban and peri urban farming
  • Looking outside of population centers when talking about maximizing sustainable practices in the 99% of farmland producing most food in the world
  • National Priority to train people to farm sustainably
  • Promote sustainable circular economy
  • Include these topics in education curriculum in the highschool and college level

Applied Science and Technology Solutions

This workshop discuss ways in which technology can be applied to promote and advance sustainable practices.

They came up with the following proposal:

  • Invest into technology that handles the end of life management of products associated with food production
  • Determine applicable patons in existing research in order to get a business idea to apply it to
  • Find support of policy and collaboration to fund new technology
  • Stop using fear to convince people that the impacts of climate change are important
  • Use incentives for companies that use sustainable technology
  • Create education plans for undergraduates to develop business plans

Policy and Regulation to Promote Environmental, Economical and Social Sustainability

This workshop discussed how we can promote change among individuals and institutions to practice sustainable lifestyles.

They came us with the following ideas:

  • Identify the spark plugs - who are the faculty students and staff who have motivation and idea and resources to create things so that others are drawn to action
  • Pick a venue or population where these is enough purchasing power to make change
  • Get support from “powerful” individuals
  • Frame regulation as an entrepreneur challenge
  • Use unapologetic taste to shift our eating habits
