Ms. Penny Miller-nelson named interim superintendent

With Superintendent Michael Sharrow retiring effective July 31, 2023, Associate Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson has been named as Interim Superintendent by the Midland Public Schools Board of Education, effective August 1, 2023.

At the MPS Board of Education Meeting on Monday, May 15, 2023, the Board passed a motion for the appointment of Ms. Miller-Nelson as Interim Superintendent. Ms. Miller-Nelson has a long history with MPS, beginning in 2008 when she was hired as the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Curriculum Coordinator. During her time as the CTE Curriculum Coordinator, much of her time was spent in the middle and high schools, establishing relationships with staff and students. She recalls the welcome she always received from each one!

During part of this period, Ms. Miller-Nelson held a shared position of CTE Curriculum Coordinator for MPS as well as CTE Director for the Midland County Educational Service Agency. Due to some reorganization of the MPS Curriculum department, she moved into the position of CTE Coordinator and Science Coordinator for the district, followed by the position of Secondary Curriculum Coordinator which included English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Ms. Miller-Nelson became the Associate Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) in 2018 and continues in that position currently, keeping her knowledge of curriculum and instruction and her advocacy for students at the forefront of her work. In her time with MPS, she has been a part of all major curriculum initiatives that have been implemented.

During her tenure as Associate Superintendent, she has worked alongside Superintendent Sharrow for the past five years and will continue to do so until his retirement in July to ensure a smooth transition period for the district.

In addition to her professional connection to Midland Public Schools, Ms. Miller-Nelson is also the parent of an MPS graduate, has served on numerous boards in the community, and has lived and worked in Midland for many years, strengthening her commitment to MPS and its stakeholders.

Ms. Miller-Nelson is enthusiastic about taking on this role and would like to share this with MPS and the Midland community:

"Midland Public Schools is a special place. We have amazing students, educators, support staff, families, and community partners. I look forward to serving and leading our school community and moving us forward in positive ways that support student growth, well-being, and achievement. Together, we will continue to build our legacy of excellence and reach our vision of success for all." - Penny Miller-Nelson
