Pumpkin Pie Spice

With Halloween come and gone, we find ourselves barreling headlong into the Holiday season. Pumpkins that were once shunned to our doorsteps are now brought into our kitchens. Well, maybe not the same pumpkin, but you get the idea: It’s time for Pumpkin Pie! And just like that, we descend into the season of everything pumpkin spice. Lattes, Oreos, and yes, even beer now comes in this seasonal flavor. We can’t get enough of it. How did a humble squash become such an icon? And what is Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Pumpkin Pie was birthed by a clash of the old world and the new. Early European explorers brought the squash back to France, where it was named Pompion after its round shape. This name was later adapted into Pumpkin. It gained popularity among the English, who created many variations on what would later come to be the modern Pumpkin Pie. One of the earliest recorded recipes for such a desert included milk, nuts, apples and other spices stewed in a hollowed out pumpkin. Recipes like these may not have been well known by the pilgrims when they landed in Plymouth, but they were probably at least familiar with the new world squash. Thus, some variation of pumpkin pie probably made an appearance at the first Thanksgiving. Pumpkin Pie has since been associated with the holiday and the values that holiday is meant to represent: peace, compassion and gratitude.

Jump to modern times and Pumpkin Pie has become an American obsession. We even have a spice blend, specifically for one desert. How crazy is that? Most culinary authorities agree than Pumpkin Pie Spice (sometimes shortened to just Pumpkin Spice) is a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger. These are the same ingredients in Marketspice’s blend. But using it just for Pumpkin Pie would be selling this blend short. Why wait for fall every year to enjoy that Pumpkin Spice Latte?
