Project #1: Curricular Assessment William Kenyon

Learning Objectives

After completing this presentation, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of curricular assessment.
  • Explain how curricular assessment directly impacts students.
  • Create course outcomes for a college level course.

The "What"

So what exactly is assessment anyway? Let's turn to Google and see what Google thinks!

The "Why".

Why do we assess? Why assessment?

The students are why.

The "How"

The assessment cycle is a process that educators follow to review program effectiveness. That's it!

The assessment cycle is a continuous loop.

Activity: Writing Student Learning Goals

The first step in the assessment cycle is to plan goals. Think about a course you either teach or would like to teach. Using Blooms Taxonomy, think up some outcomes (goals) for your course.

Example: After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of creativity and innovation as applied to education.
  • Identify and use current, relevant technology in the service of better learning.
  • Integrate technology into an instructional event that supports the use of Bloom’s digital/revised taxonomy.

Now that you have thought up some outcomes, let’s expand upon them!

Using a Mind Map, list your outcomes (three minimum) and branch out with what each outcome will accomplish or encompass. You can branch out once or as many times as you want! We will use this mind map later when we get to the implement step in the assessment cycle, so don’t lose it!

So, what are mind maps?

According to mindmapping.com (n.d)., a Mind Map is a “diagram for representing tasks, words, concepts, or items linked to and arranged around a central concept or subject using a non-linear graphical layout that allows the user to build an intuitive framework around a central concept. A Mind Map can turn a long list of monotonous information into a colorful, memorable and highly organized diagram that works in line with your brain's natural way of doing things.”

Congratulations on completing the first unit and learning about the assessment process. In this module, we learned about the "what, "why" and "how" of the assessment cycle, reviewing the first step of the assessment loop, "Plan". In the next module, we are going to be focusing on step two of the assessment cycle: implement. Using your mind map that we just completed, we will begin the curriculum mapping process.

See you next time!
