Stuck on stickers by Morgan Salzer

For most of my life, technology has been regarded in an almost dystopian sort of way. In literature, it often represents an oppressive system or the lack of independence, like the genetically altered humans in Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, or Big Brother’s totalitarian tactics in “1984.” Thinking about this, it is easy to become fearful that the growth of technology will reduce humans to a state of total conformity. Humans, however, have taken to an unlikely method of battling this potential future: stickers. By placing stickers on the back of laptops and other objects, it allows for individuality to shine through and permits the world to know who the user is, besides just another face from behind a computer screen.

Sticker decor is not just limited to computers. Stickers can be found littered across many different kinds of everyday objects, like skateboards, cars, lockers and water bottles.

Stickers can also be symbolic of actions that a person has accomplished, such as the iconic "I voted" stickers.

Stickers are a unique form of expression, one which reflects individuality and creativity. They can show the world what one likes, what activities they participate in or what they believe. They are a way for us to communicate who we are in a relaxed, metaphorical way. From the back of your computer to the back of your car, these popular adornments might just stick around for a while.
