The Ann Foxworthy Gallery, at Allan Hancock College, is proud to present a collection of work from our Fine Arts Students. Over the past eleven months our Fine Arts Students, have pivoted to online art studio instruction, alongside our amazing faculty. The students and faculty have found and learned new ways to connect over zoom and new digital resources for artists and instructors to communicate and critique and overcome the challenges of the past year.

Through it all, our Fine Arts Students have been busy, inspired, and motivated, creating incredible marks, drawing, constructing, painting and more. Please enjoy this exhibit of student art created in ERT (emergency remote teaching)

Exploring Portrait Through Photography

Finding the Figure

Life drawings and studies. With remote learning and the lack of having physical life drawing models, students and faculty rose to the challenge of learning to master the figure. Using Instructor's live zoom studio drawing demos and instruction, to photographic imagery as reference and small maquettes, loaned to students to utilize at home. Students study the internal structures of our bodies, gesture and expression as well as form.

Below is an example of a student's drawing and setup at home with a small skeleton maquette. Students learn to light their setups to create dynamic light and shadow and to better see and explore the form.

Form, Value and Stilllife

The building blocks of art, the cube, cylinder and sphere. Through live online demos and guidance from instructors, students have continued to practice and learn the drawing skills to attain their next level of expertise. With remote learning, having access to a still life, lit and ready to work with in the art studio classroom isn't possible. Students gathered the equivalent of cylinder and sphere-like objects in their homes to create still lives and lighting to study. You might see some familiar household objects in their drawings.

Art History and Art Exploration

Painting and Multi Media

Some art mediums demand a little working space, normally found in the large art studio classrooms on campus. Room for paint tubes and pallets, brushes, tools, easels and more. Space to spread out and build. Our students were innovative in carving out small studio spaces in bedrooms, garages, taking over dining tables or perhaps a corner of a busy household alongside others learning or working from home around them. Finding a space to focus on their art.

Multimedia art

Assemblage art pieces: Building, collaging and assembling with tools and ephemeral materials (Objects, paper, textiles, cardboard, books and other found materials).

Altered Books

Utilizing old texts, students carve into the pages, create cubbies, drawers with additional art elements, flaps and openings that all tell a narrative in these altered books. To take look inside each altered books and their interiors and details please view the videos below

Color Theory

Color theory is an essential part of learning for traditional arts, design and media arts students. Students spend a semester learning about color theory and create large scale hand made books for their final projects, exploring color concepts. Packaging Design

As part of our design classes, students study packaging and graphic design. Students created these label designs from concept to final design, mocking up the final product and learning how to photograph their work.

Character and Concept Art

Creating character art and concept art is an integral part of learning for future illustrators, animators and entertainment industry artists. Many students focus their digital work on creating characters and world building. These were created in digital paint in Adobe Photoshop or with vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator.

Motion Graphics

Aa part of the Media Arts program, students can learn motion graphics skills that will give them the knowledge and abilities to move into the field of entertainment, gaming, animation and web design.

Students learn to create moving graphics using computer technology. Students work from their original design concepts to final animation, with the guidance and live demonstrations of our instructors.

Photography

Through out the past year, our photography students have documented their worlds. Learning from their instructors, how to capture the light, work with digital technology and document the subjects of their work in a dynamic and empathetic way. Dance

Our dance students have been finding unique spaces to not only practice, but perform their art through out the past year. With the loss of performing to an actual audience, dance students and instructors worked with cameras, learned to edit film and create amazing dance performances art that can be viewed by a virtual audience.

We hope you have enjoyed Allan Hancock's, Fine Art Student's creative works from the past year. At times, it seemed as if it would be a monumental challenge to replicate in person arts learning experiences and replicate the art studio learning space within remote learning. Our Faculty and Students were up for the challenge. Our Faculty have been reaching out to students in new ways and discovering and incorporating new ways of teaching. Our students have been creative, and inspiring, finding ways to produce artworks and expression using what they have around them to create beautiful works of art.
