Fortnum & Mason Platinum Pudding Competition

What is it?

The Platinum Pudding Competition is a celebratory competition to mark the Queen’s 70th year of service on the throne. Entrants are asked to submit a recipe for their best sweet pudding that would be served at an afternoon tea, and the best entries will be put forward through a number of rounds until 5 finalists remain for the final in March. Please see a full timeline below. The competition has a star-studded judging panel including Dame Mary Berry, and the winner's recipe will be gifted to the Queen as part of her jubilee celebrations, along with receiving a range of other prizes.

Key Information:

  • The Platinum Pudding Competition is open to all children 8 years and older.
  • The competition is now open for entry and will close on the 4th February.
  • This competition is open to all individuals, families, school classes, community groups, companies and other entities. However, one lead entrant must be nominated and submit the entry on their behalf.
  • There is a limit of only one entry per person. If entrants submit more than one entry, only the first will be judged and the others will be disregarded.
  • Full details and how to enter – https://www.fortnumandmason.com/platinum-pudding

Judging Criteria:

The recipe form must be filled out in English and list the ingredients in metric measurements. In addition, judges are looking for a winning pudding that meets the following criteria:

  • You must ensure the ingredients list is 100% accurate - even a degree of imprecision will affect the flavour. And of course, it should taste delicious.
  • The pudding needs to be easy enough for people everywhere to recreate at home. Try to use ingredients and kitchen equipment readily available to people all over the world.
  • The judges will be looking for a great story behind each entry. Perhaps the recipe was inspired by Her Majesty The Queen’s life, is a family recipe, or recalls a special memory.
  • A few final decorative flourishes always help – and make sure the photograph that is submitted is nice and clear for the judges. Make it look fit for the Queen!

Timeline:

10th January – Competition opens for entries, 4th February – Final day to submit your entry.

The final:

Week commencing 14th March 2022

The five finalists will be invited to Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly, London to bake their recipe for the judging panel. If for any reason a finalist cannot attend or wishes to forfeit, the opportunity will be offered to the next runner up. Later that day, the winner of the Platinum Pudding Competition and the winning recipe will be announced on the F&M website www.fortnumandmason.com/platinum-pudding.

The Winning Pudding

  • The winning recipe will be gifted to The Queen and the public as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Fortnum & Mason are working in partnership with The Big Jubilee Lunch who will encourage people to make the recipe at home to enjoy with family, friends, and their local community.
  • The winner’s name will appear on all pudding packaging, and in our marketing communications too.
  • The pudding will be sold as either a fresh product in Fortnum & Mason or a packaged item to buy online. (It depends on the winning recipe.)
  • ALL profits will be donated to two UK charities.

Two runners up prizes: The Platinum Jubilee Hamper valued at £225

The winner’s prize:

Besides the opportunity for your winning pudding to go down in history, the winner of the competition will be awarded:

  • The Platinum Pudding Competition trophy
  • The Platinum Jubilee Hamper valued at £225
  • Credit on the recipe and packaging (if the pudding goes into production)
  • A Fortnum & Mason gift voucher valued at £500
  • Afternoon Tea for two in the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon valued at £140

Cedar Road Reading Corner

Welcome to the new Cedar Road Reading Corner. Every two weeks there will be exciting information about books that you may like to read, challenges for your children to take part in and information about our school library and local library in Abington.

KS1: Mrs Smyth recommends any of the Hairy Maclary books. Join hairy Maclary on his adventures with his many friends like Scarface Claw. These books have wonderful rhyme – have fun reading them with your adult at home.

KS2: Mrs Smyth recommends D Day Dog by Tom Palmer – this is a brilliant book that I first came across when the author read it to his dog during the first lockdown.

Jack can’t wait for the school trip to the D-Day landing beaches. It’s his chance to learn more about the war heroes he has always admired – brave men like his dad, who is a reserve soldier. But when his dad is called up to action and things at home spiral out of control, everything Jack believes about war is thrown into question. Finding comfort only in the presence of his loyal dog, Finn, Jack is drawn to the heart-wrenching true story of one particular D-Day paratrooper. On 6 June 1944, Emile Corteil parachuted into France with his dog, Glen – and Jack is determined to discover their fate …

Parents: Miss Phillips recommends Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Smart, warm, uplifting, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realises. . .the only way to survive is to open your heart.

Abington Library (Community Managed) Visit your local library to borrow some wonderful books. It’s free!

…and finally, a little challenge for you all. Send in a photo of you reading to an adult at home in the most unusual place you can think of. I wonder who will choose the most unusual setting. Please send photos to hphillips@cedarroadacademy.co.uk and look out for them on the next newsletter.
